Because literary fiction by veterans continues to achieve mainstream recognition, and nonfiction becomes more inclusive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unsung women decipher enemy plans in \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Code-Girls-Untold-American-Breakers\/dp\/0316352535\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" data-original-title=\"\">Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers of World War II<\/a>.\u201d The welcome and necessary anthology \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Its-Country-Too-Revolution-Afghanistan\/dp\/1612348319\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" data-original-title=\"\">It\u2019s My Country Too: Women\u2019s Military Stories from the American Revolution to Afghanistan<\/a>\u201d gives a voice to females who fight for the right to fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, Military Times presented reviews of 60 books and considered reviewing dozens of others. \u201cConsidered\u201d means we read portions of other books in order to determine whether a review would serve readers. Those books often are \u201cnoted but not reviewed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In two categories, here are the most memorable. This story, a well-deserved finalist for the National Book Award, blends suspense with substance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Turkey-Syria border, an Iraqi-born American interpreter from \u201ca war against Iraqis\u201d decides to support insurgents in Syria; it\u2019s his way of finding atonement. His strained bedfellow, Daphne, also understands that \u201cfighting doesn\u2019t go on because of ideas. It goes on because of loss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Together they have nothing left to lose, and readers have everything to gain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1334\" height=\"750\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-spoils.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67614\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-spoils.jpg.jpg 1334w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-spoils.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-spoils.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-spoils.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1334px) 100vw, 1334px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Spoils <\/b>by Brian Van Reet, Boudreaux, 304 pages, $26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Spoils-Brian-Van-Reet\/dp\/0316316164\/\" title=\"\" data-original-title=\"\">veteran\u2019s first book<\/a>, Cassandra is a 19-year-old soldier without \u201cthe wariness that comes through the accumulated calamity of years.\u201d And she is tough \u2014 \u201cthe most dangerous thing around,\u201d even when she and two other soldiers become unintended spoils of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the Ackerman novel (above), \u201cSpoils\u201d has an ending that resonates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2134\" height=\"1200\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67617\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg 2134w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,864 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/spring-2017-book-review-war-porn.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1152 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2134px) 100vw, 2134px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>War Porn<\/b> by Roy Scranton, SoHo, 352 pages, $26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former soldier who wrote about our volatile globe in the nonfiction \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Learning-Die-Anthropocene-Reflections-Civilization\/dp\/1531889271\" title=\"\" class=\"\" data-original-title=\"\">Learning to Die in the Anthropocene<\/a>\u201d (it made Military Times\u2019 2015 list) turns to fiction, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/War-Porn-Roy-Scranton\/dp\/1616957158\" class=\"\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\">his debut novel<\/a> is about soldiers and civilians trying to survive their own and the rest of the world\u2019s volatility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Particularly impressive is the short story that bookends the novel, about a backyard barbecue where tempers and passion fire up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"498\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/brave-deedsWEB.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/brave-deedsWEB.jpg.jpg 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/brave-deedsWEB.jpg.jpg?resize=300,195 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Brave Deeds <\/b>by David Abrams, Black Cat, 256 pages, $16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five years after his superb first novel, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fobbit-David-Abrams\/dp\/0802120326\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" title=\"\">Fobbit<\/a>,\u201d Army veteran Abrams leaves the base, and satire, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Brave-Deeds-David-Abrams\/dp\/0802126863\/\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" title=\"\">goes AWOL<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His brave dudes, six characters in search of the memorial service for a beloved staff sergeant, unofficially procure a Humvee that breaks down in desolate, dangerous urban space. Why? War engages him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a third Iraq tour, the flight surgeon breaks. He finds himself on an operating table, and tests find a brain aneurysm.
