Michael Young was in the middle of his fifth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/02\/28\/black-soldier-killed-in-wwi-was-denied-medal-of-honor-advocates-are-now-trying-to-change-that\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">combat <\/a>deployment to Afghanistan last year when he and his fellow Rangers found themselves in an \u201cterrifyingly chaotic\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/16\/medal-of-honor-recipient-to-future-leaders-be-good-people\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">firefight <\/a>from the moment they hit the ground that would last for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were working alongside their Afghan counterparts on a nighttime raid after a high- value target, Young said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What Young, a squad leader in C Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, did next would save the lives of 22 Rangers and result in his being awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/05\/19\/ranger-receives-silver-star-for-saving-afghan-soldier-during-raid-on-isis-commander\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover865792\">Silver Star medal<\/a> on Friday at Fort Benning, Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/03\/29\/trump-approves-medal-of-honor-for-world-war-ii-hero\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"254\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/garlin-conner.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Medal of Honor approved for World War II hero<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The soldier&#039;s widow has been fighting for the upgrade for 20 years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 28-year-old Savannah, Georgia native was no stranger to the Ranger community growing up near the home of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"927\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young3.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67878\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young3.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young3.jpg.jpg?resize=300,232 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young3.jpg.jpg?resize=768,593 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young3.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,791 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Staff Sgt. That was achieved shortly after he enlisted in 2011 and soon joined the regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battalion had deployed in January 2017 to \u201cvarious locations around the world to conduct counterterrorism operations.\u201d The battalion\u2019s primary mission was \u201cdismantling terror threat networks and continuing to legitimize the governments of Afghanistan and other middle eastern countries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Friday ceremony honored not only Young but also eight soldiers who received the Bronze Star for valor and 14 soldiers who were awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for Valor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Young\u2019s team was operating in Nangarhar province at the time of the raid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On April 27, 2017, the strike force \u201creceived intense and precise enemy fire simultaneously from multiple covered positions in all directions immediately upon a helicopter insertion,\u201d read his Silver Star medal citation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seeing the threat, Young \u201caggressively exposed himself to direct fires to eliminate the enemy and protect the force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He clambered up to the highest elevation point he could find, marked his position for the strike force and began reporting enemy positions for fire missions to knock out enemy targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"927\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young2.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,232 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,593 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SSgt-Michael-Young2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,791 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Staff Sgt. David Soflin\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ensuing four-hour firefight only rose in intensity, lasting into the night, Young said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He and his element were cut off from the rest of the strike force but Young continued to expose himself to fire, calling in several \u201cdanger close\u201d engagements to call in air bombardments. That allowed the medical evacuation helicopter to insert and retrieve two urgent surgical patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staff sergeant said though not all the Rangers in the deployment nor the raid were presented with official awards, their efforts enabled him to do his job and vice versa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called their work \u201cmonumental\u201d and said the deployment\u2019s success was a testament to the regiment and how it trains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe training we conduct is always tough and gritty,\u201d he said, and constant assessment allows them to maintain a high level of efficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt really showed itself in that situation and every situation,\u201d Young said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Staff Sgt.
