{"id":35055,"date":"2018-12-19T21:31:33","date_gmt":"2018-12-19T21:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/12\/19\/twice-deported-veteran-buried-in-texas-with-military-funeral-honors\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:59:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:59:09","slug":"twice-deported-veteran-buried-in-texas-with-military-funeral-honors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/veterans\/2018\/12\/19\/twice-deported-veteran-buried-in-texas-with-military-funeral-honors\/","title":{"rendered":"Twice deported veteran buried in Texas with military funeral honors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MISSION, Texas \u2014 Carlos Jaime Torres\u2019s family recently gathered under a tree to watch him lowered to his final resting spot at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themonitor.com\/2018\/12\/14\/deported-vet-laid-rest-honored-service\/\" target=_blank>The Monitor reports<\/a> the late veteran received a hero\u2019s welcome back to the country that twice deported him, complete with full military funeral honors \u2014 a 21-gun salute, \u201cTaps,\u201d and presenting of the flag to the next of kin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Torres died this month in Reynosa, Mexico, at 64.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It means a lot, actually,&#8221; Torres&#8217;s 33-year-old son Sam Mosqueda said of the ceremony performed by the Fort Sam Houston Honor Guard. &#8220;That&#8217;s what he deserves. It&#8217;s the bare minimum, since he was not allowed re-entry into this nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Torres was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/03\/26\/army-veteran-in-us-since-age-8-deported-after-prison-stint\/\" target=_blank>brought to the United States as a small child<\/a> and was raised in California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;While other people were draft dodging, he actually volunteered,&#8221; Sam said. &#8220;He wanted to go to Vietnam. That was just the type of person he was.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/04\/14\/deported-veteran-becomes-us-citizen-after-california-pardon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18103809939758.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Deported veteran becomes US citizen after California pardon<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Hector Barajas, who was deported to Mexico in 2010, beamed after taking his citizenship oath in a small, private ceremony at a government office in San Diego in full military uniform.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Torres was honorably discharged in 1976 after serving four years. In 1994, he was convicted of possession of marijuana and served four years before his deportation to Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He believed he was an American citizen until the time he was deported,&#8221; Sam said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Torres returned to the United States illegally and lived in Mission. He would be deported a second time in 2010, subsequently working in Reynosa as a security guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-McAllen, has made it a priority to address the issue of veteran deportations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Torres&#8217; sons said their father instilled a sense of service in them. Four of his five sons served in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Growing up, he would say, &#8216;You&#8217;re an American. Be proud of it,'&#8221; his 36-year-old son Carlos Edward Mosqueda said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His children said Torres always embodied an attitude of selflessness and set a good example. Carlos remembers seeing his father apprehend someone running through the yard that was chased by law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My father was always a hero to me, from a very early age,&#8221; Carlos said. &#8220;I wanted to grow up to be just like that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carlos served in both the Navy and Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He encouraged all of us at the age of 18 to serve our country,&#8221; he said. &#8220;He was just proud to be an American, period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Even in Mexico, he would say, &#8216;Yeah, I&#8217;m an American.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Mexico, he was seen as an American, and in the United States, he was seen as a Mexican.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He was a bastard of two countries,&#8221; Carlos said. &#8220;He didn&#8217;t have a place, period. He reminisced about playing chess and getting advice from the man he called his best friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sam called his time with him the &#8220;best thing that could have happened to me because I had the chance to build a relationship with my father.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And he remembered how Torres tried to steer him away from the wrong crowds so he could help Sam not make the same mistakes he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;&#8216;Look son, you&#8217;re headed down the wrong way,'&#8221; Sam said, recalling the advice of his father. &#8220;&#8216;I know, because I&#8217;ve been there.
