Ford has been widely criticized for having a myriad of mechanical issues, but the U.S. Navy can scratch the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System off that list, according to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.navair.navy.mil\/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.NAVAIRNewsStory&amp;id=6596\">Naval Air Systems Command release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy says it performed 71 successful test launches this summer to confirm that the launch system is finally working correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While EMALS has always been able to safely launch aircraft at the desired speed, engineers discovered in 2014 that the system was putting an inordinate amount of stress on the planes, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2016\/09\/18\/carrier-ford-has-serious-power-problem\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/carrier-gerald-r-ford-cvn78-turnaround-bow.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Carrier Ford Has Serious Power Problem<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">For over a year, the US Navy and its shipbuilders have been anxious to get the new aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford to sea and begin engineering trials of the first-of-class design. A number of publicly-announced target dates have come and gone, but the ship is still firmly moored at Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia. Now a key factor in preventing the ship from casting off lines and getting underway is coming into view. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were confident since the day that the issue was uncovered that it was solvable,\u201d George Sulich, EMALS integrated program team lead, said in the release. \u201cThe beauty of the system is that issues such as these can be accomplished with software updates instead of major hardware changes to machinery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=0c8d7828-d657-476e-95b0-5a3fbcc5cdac\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">New catapult launches dummy shot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It turns out all the EMALS team needed to do was fine-tune the launch system\u2019s algorithm. Digital. They have digital. What is digital? And it\u2019s very complicated. You have to be Albert Einstein to figure it out,\u201d Trump said in a May interview with TIME.&nbsp;\u201dAnd I said \u2014 and now they want to buy more aircraft carriers. I said what system are you going to be \u2014 \u2018Sir, we\u2019re staying with digital.\u2019 I said no you\u2019re not. You going to goddamned steam, the digital costs hundreds of millions of dollars more money and it\u2019s no good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regardless of Trump\u2019s recommendation, EMALS, which is not actually digital, is up and running and will be installed on the carrier Ford in 2019, according to the release.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The carrier Gerald R.
