John C. Ring<\/a> lost his job helming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jtfgtmo.southcom.mil\/\" target=_blank>Joint Task Force-Guantanamo<\/a> in Cuba because he \u201cmishandled or directed the mishandling of classified information, made inaccurate reports, and created a poor command climate,\u201d according to a statement released Thursday by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/08\/20\/us-southern-command-head-focused-on-day-after-in-venezuela\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Southern Command<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/Our-Story\/Biographies\/Biography\/Article\/1763126\/admiral-craig-s-faller\/\" target=_blank>Adm. Craig Faller<\/a>, SOUTHCOM\u2019s commander, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/29\/commander-of-guantanamo-bay-detention-center-fired\/\" target=_blank>fired<\/a> Ring on April 27, 43 days after launching a probe into allegations lodged against him, the release stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe expect our commanders to uphold the highest standards,\u201d Faller said in the release. \u201cWhen senior leaders do not demonstrate the sound judgement of their rank and position, we must hold them accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faller\u2019s release pushed back at perceptions that Ring was removed because of &#8220;statements he made to the media during his tenure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ring was relieved of duty on the same day the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/04\/27\/us\/politics\/guantanamo-bay-aging-terrorism-suspects-medical-care.html?module=inline\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times published a story<\/a> where he questioned the Pentagon\u2019s plans to provide long-term medical care for the aging terrorism suspects housed at the base\u2019s detention center since it opened in 2002.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The piece reported that commanders there had been ordered to draft plans to keep the site operating for another 25 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnless America\u2019s policy changes, at some point we\u2019ll be doing some sort of end of life care here,\u201d Ring was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A lot of my guys are prediabetic,\u201d he said. \u201cAm I going to need dialysis down here? I don\u2019t know. Someone\u2019s got to tell me that. Are we going to do complex cancer care down here? I don\u2019t know. John Ring was fired after just more than a year in command of the Guantanamo Bay detention center.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOUTHCOM\u2019s release failed to include a copy of the probe that allegedly triggered Ring\u2019s firing. Ring had been in charge of the installation for about a year before he was relieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy Times submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for a copy of the investigation shortly after Ring\u2019s termination, but SOUTHCOM has yet to release it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SOUTHCOM\u2019s release states that it \u201cimplemented training to address the issues identified\u201d in the Ring investigation but fails to identify what those issues were or how the nature of the training designed to fix them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ring did not immediately respond to calls from Navy Times seeking comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His current status remains unclear, although his official military biography continues to list him as the commander of the task force in Cuba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials ddin\u2019t immediately respond to questions regarding his current duty station or whether Ring has retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/09\/01\/trial-in-911-case-at-guantanamo-gets-early-2021-start-date\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"226\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19242734534565.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trial in 9\/11 case at Guantanamo gets early 2021 start date<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A military judge on Friday set a date in early 2021 for the start of the long-stalled war crimes trial of five men being held at the Guantanamo Bay prison on charges of planning and aiding the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/28\/us\/politics\/guantanamo-commander-john-ring-fired.html\" target=\"_blank\">New York Times first reported<\/a> last month that Ring had been fired for mishandling classified information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those details emerged during a pre-trial hearing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jtfgtmo.southcom.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Guantanamo<\/a> for an Iraqi prisoner accused of leading al Qaeda forces \u201cthat committed war crimes in Afghanistan in 2003 and 2004,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/28\/us\/politics\/guantanamo-commander-john-ring-fired.html\" target=\"_blank\">newspaper revealed. <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rear Adm.
