Balderrama<\/a> was discovered in a Hermosillo motel room on Feb. 4, and what happened to the 31-year-old remains unclear four months later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncis.navy.mil\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Naval Criminal Investigative Service<\/a> spokesman Jeff Houston declined to comment Wednesday, citing an ongoing probe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Navy leaders have remained mum on the case, revelations about Balderrama\u2019s health came to light after charges were filed in April against another sailor \u2014 Airman Apprentice Zachary A. Addis \u2014 who allegedly traveled to Mexico with the petty officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis and Balderrama were stationed with different strike fighter squadrons at California\u2019s Naval Air Station Lemoore.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/04\/09\/navy-investigating-sailors-death-in-mexico-2\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/balderrama.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy investigating sailor\u2019s death in Mexico<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Few details are available regarding what happened to the petty officer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis\u2019 charge sheet alleges he journeyed to Mexico \u201cwithout proper authorization while in an unauthorized absence status\u201d with Balderrama from Jan. 31 to Feb. 4, the day Balderrama\u2019s body was found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors claim that Addis knew about Balderrama\u2019s health issues, and that constituted \u201cconduct likely to cause death or grievous bodily harm\u201d to the petty officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis, 21, was also charged with failing to receive proper authority to travel to Mexico \u201cand that such dereliction of duty resulted in the death\u201d of Balderrama, the filings indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charge sheet does not specify whether Balderrama also traveled there without authorization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis\u2019 military attorney did not respond to a request for comment submitted through Navy spokesman Kevin Dixon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of Balderrama\u2019s family declined comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis was taken to special court-martial on May 22, found guilty and sentenced to a bad conduct discharge, 180 days confinement and reduction in rank to E-1, according to court records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a pretrial agreement, Navy judge Capt. Jonathan Stephens dismissed the charges connecting Addis to Balderrama\u2019s death, according to records.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a group.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the junior sailor still pleaded guilty to being absent from his unit from Jan. 14 to Feb. 4 and for an earlier unauthorized absence from Aug. 6 to Oct. 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis also pleaded guilty to using and distributing cocaine in June 2018 and for obstructing justice when he requested another sailor \u201chide his steroids\u201d from Lemoore investigators that same month, charge sheets show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Florida native has been incarcerated at the Naval Consolidated Brig Miramar in San Diego since Feb. 5, according to his service record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He received credit for 106 days he had already served.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Located about 170 miles south of the international border, Hermosillo is the largest city and capital of Sonora state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Balderrama, a Texas native, had been assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 122 since 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addis arrived at Strike Fighter
