{"id":36616,"date":"2017-10-12T20:36:21","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T20:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/10\/12\/former-sailor-claims-she-was-sexually-harassed-in-facebook-group\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:48:54","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:48:54","slug":"former-sailor-claims-she-was-sexually-harassed-in-facebook-group","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/10\/12\/former-sailor-claims-she-was-sexually-harassed-in-facebook-group\/","title":{"rendered":"NCIS to investigate popular Facebook site for new claim of online harassment"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy criminal investigators are looking at a popular Navy-themed Facebook page after a former female sailor complained about a photo posted of her that prompted a stream of threats and online sexual harassment, Navy officials said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photo was posted Wednesday to \u201cS&#8211;t my LPO says,\u201d or SMLPOS, a public Facebook group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photo featured the former sailor in her Navy uniform and the image was emblazoned with a porn company\u2019s logo.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman, who asked to be identified only as \u201cMaria,\u201d said she woke up Wednesday to \u201ctons of messages from people I served with\u2026saying, \u2018you\u2019re on this website.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The photo had been shared 80 times, had about 1,400 likes and more than 180 mostly mocking and lewd comments as of Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was shaking,\u201d the 31-year-old said. \u201cI was so scared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said she contacted the group\u2019s administrators and asked them to take the photo down, but they refused. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to a query from Navy Times on Thursday, the administrator answering the page\u2019s messages said the group was planning on removing the image \u201ceventually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials told Navy Times Thursday that the issue would be referred to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service for further review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are taking the contents of the post very seriously and will investigate fully,\u201d Navy spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Ashley Hockycko said in an email.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concern about online sexual harassment has drawn attention from the military\u2019s top brass this year after a scandal in March involving a Marine Corps-themed group known as Marines United. Some want the combat veteran who exposed them to be killed.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of late Thursday afternoon, the image was listed twice in the group\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/shitmylposays2\/\">photos<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the comments were hateful, violent and sexual, Maria said, while the few who stood up for her were \u201cobliterated\u201d by the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis page is going to be the next Marines United,\u201d one photo commentator wrote on the SMLPOS page, referring to the previous social media scandal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Screenshots of Maria\u2019s correspondence with the page\u2019s administrator asking them to remove the image was provided to Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only reply she initially received was a laughing emoji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least one other image on the group\u2019s page features correspondence where someone else asks the administrator to remove a private photo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That request was also met with a laughing emoji.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The page administrator later wrote Maria back, stating, \u201cdon\u2019t worry, someone else already saved the world and shared it to the CNO,\u201d according to a screenshot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An image was posted in the comment threads that appears to show someone sharing the photo\u2019s link to the Facebook timeline of Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy officials said Thursday that the CNO\u2019s page does not allow sharing on his timeline and that they found no record of the post on his page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The user who posted the screenshot of the purported CNO timeline post no longer shows up in a Facebook search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not ok by any means and some of the comments are sailors,\u201d the purported post to the CNO states. \u201cI\u2019m passing this to you because I don\u2019t know who else to give it to that would actually take this type of thing as serious as you do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/04\/19\/posting-private-nude-photos-is-now-a-crime-in-the-navy-and-marine-corps\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sailors-in-formation.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Posting private nude photos is now a crime in the Navy and Marine Corps<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An interim revision to Navy regulations prohibits Navy and Marine Corps personnel from posting intimate photos \u201cif the person making the distribution or broadcast does so without legal justification or excuse,\u201d the regulation reads.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SMLPOS page later posted a screenshot of that quote, prompting about 300 comments as of Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat a f&#8212;ing b&#8211;ch,\u201d a Facebook user whose profile name is Leo Pascal Arciniega wrote. \u201cThis type of s&#8211;t is what causes \u2018accidents\u2019 to happen in certain units.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clicking Arciniega\u2019s name leads to a profile featuring a photo of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis while he was still in uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria said she does not know how SMLPOS got a hold of the photo of her in uniform, which she said was taken a few years ago during training on the range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSomewhere there\u2019s a mole, I think,\u201d she said of her Facebook friends, who include former military colleagues. \u201cI thought I had everything set to where only my friends can see things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, people began posting other photos from her personal profile in the original photo\u2019s comment thread, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m reading these comments, and they\u2019re growing,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd the shares are growing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Facebook user whose profile name is Sean Malloy posted a photo of Maria in civilian garb and commented, \u201csexually assaulted really?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said he is not one of her Facebook friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey are stealing my photos,\u201d she said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of those commenting appear to wonder why the photo is an issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s clear civilians who didn\u2019t serve don\u2019t understand military humor culture,\u201d one user wrote. \u201cAnything is on the table that\u2019s military related. Higher ups in the Chain of Command and [senior non-commissioned officers] only police this [s&#8211;t] cause of butt hurt snowflakes and current Polictial [sic] Correctness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other comments veer into the lewd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe looks like she enjoys a good double stuff,\u201d a Facebook user whose profile name is Arcides Cruz wrote. His profile lists him as a \u201cmercenary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe is going to get a face full of fluid just not OC spray,\u201d a Facebook user whose profile name is Bill Kreutzkamp wrote. Kreutzkamp\u2019s profile states he is a Coast Guard damage controlman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReminds me of the white girl we had on the ridge,\u201d a Facebook user whose profile name is Justin Dupuis wrote. \u201cI think she went thru the entire F.A.S.T. that was onboard. Come back to Yoko and they would go in her room in twos.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy issued \u201csocial media conduct\u201d guidance in March, urging anyone who has had photos taken or posted without their consent to contact the Naval Criminal Investigative Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019mma [sic] repost the s&#8211;t out of it,\u201d a Facebook user whose profile name is Corban Westmoreland wrote. \u201cSuck my dd214.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
