(U.S. Air Force graphic)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am a <a href=\"https:\/\/aero.engin.umich.edu\/people\/iain-d-boyd\/\" target=_blank>professor of aerospace engineering<\/a> at the University of Michigan, and one of my primary research areas is in the development of computational models to help design hypersonic vehicles. The research is funded by the government and private industry. I have led studies on hypersonics for the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past 60 years, U.S. interest in hypersonic vehicles has waxed and waned. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An early success was the X-15, <a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/collection-objects\/north-american-x-15\" target=_blank>a hypersonic test aircraft<\/a> with a maximum speed of 4,500 mph that was flown from 1959 to 1968. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The X-15 flew 199 times and only experienced two failures, of which one resulted in the death of the pilot. It set the stage for the development of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/shuttle\/main\/index.html\" target=_blank>the space shuttle<\/a>, which flew from 1981 to 2011. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next ramp-up in hypersonic activity was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/products\/NSIAD-88-122\" target=_blank>National Aero-Space Plane Program<\/a>, from 1986 to 1993, which never built a prototype. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent success was the X-51A, from 2005 to 2013, which set <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20967-air-force-x-51a-hypersonic-scramjet.html\" target=_blank>a world endurance record <\/a>for sustained flight of a hypersonic vehicle powered by a high-speed propulsion engine called a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/langley\/news\/factsheets\/X43A_2006_5.html\" target=_blank>scramjet.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, there were only four flights, of which flights <a href=\"https:\/\/newatlas.com\/x-51a-waverider-second-flight\/18942\/\" target=_blank>two<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/spacenews.com\/future-x-51a-test-program-uncertain-after-another-failure\/\" target=_blank>three<\/a> were not fully successful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there were no plans in place for any follow-on at the end of the X-51A program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it seems the U.S. is back in the hypersonic effort in a serious way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon has declared hypersonics to be its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2018\/03\/06\/hypersonics-highest-technical-priority-for-pentagon-rd-head\/\" target=_blank> number one<\/a> research and development technical priority. (Mikhail Klimentyev, Sputnik, Kremlin Pool Photo via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>The race for hypersonic supremacy<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China and Russia have become increasingly interested in hypersonic weapons in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2005, China has <a href=\"https:\/\/aerospaceamerica.aiaa.org\/features\/hypersonic-weapons-race\/\" target=_blank>published more research papers<\/a> at a key hypersonics conference than any other country or international group. The Chinese have invested in a number of new and impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/policies-politics\/article\/2120072\/china-builds-worlds-fastest-wind-tunnel-test-weapons\" target=_blank>hypersonic test facilities<\/a>. And, China has conducted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/china-hails-successful-test-of-a-new-hypersonic-weapon-2018-8\" target=_blank>more hypersonic flight tests<\/a> recently than the U.S. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian President Vladimir Putin recently claimed that his country\u2019s military will begin deploying a hypersonic weapon called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/26\/putin-oversees-hypersonic-weapon-test-says-its-invulnerable\/\" target=_blank>the Avangard<\/a> sometime in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not yet clear when those countries will be able to deploy hypersonic weapons in any significant numbers, which is why the U.S. has seized upon this moment to step up its efforts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent presidential <a href=\"https:\/\/comptroller.defense.gov\/Portals\/45\/Documents\/defbudget\/fy2020\/budget_justification\/pdfs\/03_RDT_and_E\/RDTE_Vol2_MDA%20RDTE_PB20_Justification_Book.pdf\" target=_blank>funding requests <\/a>for weapons development signal efforts to figure out how to deploy hypersonic weapons from air, sea and land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"550\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/e-usaf_x-15_3_in_flight.jpg_b3c387.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51595\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/e-usaf_x-15_3_in_flight.jpg_b3c387.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/e-usaf_x-15_3_in_flight.jpg_b3c387.jpg?resize=300,165 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/e-usaf_x-15_3_in_flight.jpg_b3c387.jpg?resize=768,422 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The North American Aviation X-15 rocket planes \u2013 designed to explore the problems of atmospheric and space flight at supersonic and hypersonic speeds \u2013 served as flying laboratories, carrying scientific experiments above the reaches of the atmosphere. (NASA)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Need for a good defense<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the U.S. spending appears to be aimed at developing new weapons \u2013 but that risks ignoring the key priority of defense. To counter Chinese and Russian development efforts, the Pentagon will need to invest in ways to detect, track and disable or destroy incoming hypersonic weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not clear if the types of interceptors that have been developed for defense against slower weapons will be effective against hypersonic missiles. Entirely novel approaches may be needed to defeat this new threat.
