{"id":36885,"date":"2019-01-18T19:08:42","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T19:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/18\/coast-guard-ends-search-for-missing-workers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:30:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:30:45","slug":"coast-guard-ends-search-for-missing-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/18\/coast-guard-ends-search-for-missing-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard ends search for missing workers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard has halted a search for two people who went missing on the Mississippi River Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katelyn Carlisle and Rueben Arellano disappeared in the water near<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Boothville-Venice,+LA\/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x889f07571b7645b3:0x1c2b7595559f5d26?ved=2ahUKEwiC36SIgPjfAhUBheAKHVFEDMsQ8gEwEXoECAQQCA\" target=_blank> Bootheville, Louisiana<\/a>, on Wednesday morning after their 32-foot workboat capsized. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard scrambled an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcms.uscg.mil\/Portals\/10\/CG-9\/Acquisition%20PDFs\/Factsheets\/MH-65.pdf?ver=2017-03-22-095254-683\" target=_blank> MH-65 Dolphin<\/a> rescue helicopter crew from Air Station New Orleans to search for the pair last seen near Mile 18 of the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were soon joined in the air by a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ppso.net\/\" target=_blank>Plaquemines Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> helicopter and on the water by two Coast Guard boat crews from Station Venice and another from the cutter Mako, plus boat teams from the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries and Branch Pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/16\/food-pantry-opens-for-employees-affected-by-shutdown-at-coast-guard-academy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8048363892_3e9da9cce1_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Food pantry opens for employees affected by shutdown at Coast Guard Academy<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A coalition of Coast Guard-related nonprofit groups has opened a pop-up food pantry at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy to help Coast Guard and academy workers affected by the partial government shutdown.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard dragnet sprawled over 130 square nautical miles and ran for 27 hours, officials told Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSuspending our search is never an easy decision to make,\u201d said Cmdr. Michael Wolfe, a search and rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans, in a written statement emailed to Navy Times. \u201cThe Coast Guard, along with local and state responders, spared no efforts over the past day, but unfortunately we did not locate the missing individuals. Our prayers and condolences are with the families of the missing individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard reopened river traffic at 8 p.m. Wednesday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff\u2019s Office took control of the ongoing search, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msrc.org\/about-us\/company\" target=_blank>Marine Spill Response Corporation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arellano and Carlisle worked for MSRC, a not-for-profit oil spill response service that helps mitigate damage to the environment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the recovery efforts transition to the local Sheriff\u2019s office, MSRC will do everything possible to assist them with finding our missing employees,\u201d the company posted on its website. \u201cWe are maintaining close communication with the families of Katelyn Carlisle and Ruben Arellano and providing them with needed support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to MSRC, salvage operations continue about 150 feet north of where the workboat capsized. A side scan sonar found the boat Thursday morning and MSRC is working with salvors and divers to rig the vessel and lift it out of the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MSRC officials say that salvage operations have been dogged by poor visibility, chilly water and currents rising to 4 knots, forcing them to suspend efforts on Thursday evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But crews vowed to resume recovery operations on Friday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile we are anxious to recover the vessel and hope to locate our missing team members and loved ones, MSRC is proceeding with the required care to ensure a safe lift on Friday,\u201d the company
