{"id":36943,"date":"2016-01-14T00:19:11","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T00:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/01\/14\/navy-to-deploy-hunter-killer-pack-of-ships-to-asia-pacific\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:38:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:38:36","slug":"navy-to-deploy-hunter-killer-pack-of-ships-to-asia-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/01\/14\/navy-to-deploy-hunter-killer-pack-of-ships-to-asia-pacific\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy to deploy hunter-killer pack of ships to Asia-Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The surface Navy\u2019s top officer announced on Tuesday the deployment of a surface action group this spring <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">on Tuesday <\/span>in a move to make the surface fleet more formidable against sophisticated\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, part of his plan to reinvigorate the surface force and make it relevant against high-end <\/span>adversaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three destroyers set<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">scheduled<\/span> for independent deployments are being<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">will be<\/span> banded <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">together <\/span>into a surface action group under <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">a <\/span>Destroyer Squadron 31 and sent out to test new concepts of <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">operating surface ships in <\/span>hunter-killer groups of ships designed to confuse and scatter adversaries\u2019 resources, Vice Adm. Tom Rowden told the annual meeting of the Surface Navy Association.\u00a0The SAG is to consist of destroyers Spruance, Decatur and Momsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rowden has been championing a concept that breaks up <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">the <\/span>traditional carrier strike groups and amphibious ready groups and joins up <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">by banding groups of <\/span>surface combatants that can spread out the enemy\u2019s surveillance assets and ships<span class=\"rte rte-comment\"> to look for SAGs<\/span>, and adds long range anti-ship and anti-sub <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">surface and anti-submarine <\/span>weapons to make the ships more deadly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is to deceive the enemy, target the enemy and destroy the enemy,&#8221; Rowden<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">t<\/span> said. &#8220;If we can execute that, we can change the calculus of our adversaries and our potential adversaries.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an interview, Rowden said the surface action groups will add <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">were about adding <\/span>capabilities to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">offer up to <\/span>combatant commanders, four-stars who oversee operations in their regions around the world.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We need to deploy the ships and\u00a0begin to understand the effects we can achieve,&#8221; Rowden said. &#8220;We can then begin to articulate those to the combatant commanders. So when the combatant commanders say, &#8216;I need this capability,&#8217; we can say, &#8216;This is the capability I can deliver with this adaptive force package, this is what we can deliver with the other package.&#8217;\u00a0That way we can express to the combatant commanders the options available beyond the carrier strike groups.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is part of a larger push inside the Navy to offer up more options to COCOMs\u00a0to ease the burden on the aircraft carriers, which have been <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">heavily <\/span>taxed over the past five years.
