It also will broadcast more information on sightings to prevent military and commercial ships from striking right whales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right whales number only about 440 and suffer from poor reproduction. The biggest threats to the species are commercial ship strikes and fishing-gear entanglements.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/14\/sick-killer-whale-sought-by-coast-guard-noaa-crews-declared-dead\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Orca.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coast Guard had searched for the young killer whale<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A Coast Guard helicopter, 10 vessels, whale watch crews and other teams on both sides of the border were involved in the search.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s efforts comply with federal laws aimed at protecting the whales. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\" target=_blank> National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> issued final approval of the Navy\u2019s plans on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/\" target=_blank>Natural Resources Defense Council <\/a>said the Navy\u2019s efforts fail to go far enough.
