{"id":37248,"date":"2019-01-03T16:41:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T16:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/03\/coast-guard-suspends-search-for-missing-child-suspected-smuggler\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:51:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:51:27","slug":"coast-guard-suspends-search-for-missing-child-suspected-smuggler","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/03\/coast-guard-suspends-search-for-missing-child-suspected-smuggler\/","title":{"rendered":"Coast Guard suspends search for missing child, suspected smuggler"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Wednesday evening, the Coast Guard suspended the search for a 9-year-old child and a suspected smuggler believed to have been swept out to sea after their rickety boat capsized off Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Haitian child and the suspected smuggler, a Bahamian citizen, went missing after their 18-foot boat overturned with 11 people on board Sunday in what authorities believe was an underworld operation from Freeport to Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coast Guard officials in Miami said that a good Samaritan vessel had fished nine people from the water on Sunday nearly 53 nautical miles east of the Palm Beach County shoreline, about the midway point between Freeport and Jupiter, Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That triggered a 69-hour search over 4,154 square miles that included Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules planes from Air Station Clearwater, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry medium range surveillance aircraft from Air Station Miami and the cutters Robert Yered from Miami; Moray from Port Canaveral; and Ridley from Mayport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis case is a tragic reminder of the dangers of illegal migrant smuggling and these smuggling networks reckless regard for those they are trafficking. Suspending a search is one of the most difficult decisions we have to make as first responders, and it is never made lightly,\u201d said Capt. Aldante Vinciguerra, Coast Guard 7th District chief of response, in a written statement emailed to Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/03\/coast-guard-navy-continue-rescue-efforts-after-commercial-ship-fire\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Poseidon2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coast Guard, Navy continue rescue efforts after commercial ship fire<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Navy, Coast Guard and several commercial vessels searched for a handful of mariners who abandoned a burning ship.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late Wednesday on the other side of the globe, Coast Guard officials on Wake Island also suspended their search for five survivors of a New Year\u2019s Eve fire on board the car carrier Sincerity Ace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four bodies had been found bobbing in the waves about 1,800 nautical miles northwest of Oahu but they were unresponsive and made no effort to grasp lifesaving equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fifth missing mariner was never spotted, despite a search that canvassed 5,832 square nautical miles of ocean and involved two HC-130 Hercules surveillance planes from Oahu\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificarea.uscg.mil\/Our-Organization\/District-14\/D14-Units\/Air-Station-Barbers-Point\/ASBP-History\/\">Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point<\/a>, five commercial vessels and a P-8A Poseidon surveillance aircraft from the Navy\u2019s Patrol Squadron 47 that\u2019s deployed to Kadena Air Base in Okinawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the Coast Guard planes, the Navy\u2019s Golden Swordsmen also staged at Wake and flew two very long flights on Tuesday and Wednesday, locating a lifeboat adrift on the high seas with no one in it, plus a pair of abandoned lifebuoys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four commercial vessels rescued 16 of the crew members of the Sincerity Ace, which remains abandoned, burning, adrift and listing to starboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFollowing the conclusion of morning and afternoon searches by our aircraft and commercial vessels we suspended the active search. 308-foot Chinese-flagged commercial fishing vessel, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npfc.int\/vessels\/401\">Ou Ya Leng Number 6<\/a>, ran aground on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.infomarshallislands.com\/atolls-m-w\/taka-atoll\/\">Taka Atoll<\/a> and began taking on water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coast Guard officials told Navy Times that the air crew made contact with the Chinese mariners, who remained on board the vessel while using emergency generator power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They awaited the Thursday
