American and Russian officials blamed each other for a near collision<\/a> of two warships on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt roughly 11:45 local time, the guided-missile cruiser Chancellorsville<\/a> and the Russian anti-submarine destroyer Admiral Vinogradov crossed paths in the Philippine Sea,\u201d Cmdr. Clay Doss, spokesman for the U.S. 7th Fleet in Japan<\/a>, told Navy Times by phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doss said the American warship was recovering its helicopter and maintaining \u201ca steady course and speed\u201d when the Udaloy-class destroyer Admiral Vinogradov moved from \u201cbehind and to the right\u201d of the U.S. vessel and \u201caccelerated and closed to an unsafe distance of 50 to 100 feet.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Doss said the Russian maneuver forced the Chancellorsville to \u201cexecute all engines back full and to maneuver to avoid collision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe consider Russia\u2019s actions during this interaction as unsafe and unprofessional, certainly not in accordance with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea<\/a>,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
