{"id":37594,"date":"2018-09-12T19:56:06","date_gmt":"2018-09-12T19:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/09\/12\/a-navy-legend-honors-a-lucky-ensign\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:53:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:53:26","slug":"a-navy-legend-honors-a-lucky-ensign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/12\/a-navy-legend-honors-a-lucky-ensign\/","title":{"rendered":"A Navy legend honors a lucky ensign"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reno, Nev. \u2014 For Naval Flight Officers, the wings of gold that get pinned to their chests mark a proud moment at the beginning of a demanding career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the ceremony can be just as meaningful for those legends long past their training days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which is why <a href=\"https:\/\/goefoundation.org\/eagles\/eaglesbyyear\/2011\/358\/Driscoll-William-P\" target=_blank>William \u201cWillie Irish\u201d Driscoll<\/a>, a Navy ace from the Vietnam War, didn\u2019t hesitate when he was asked to affix golden wings to a young flight officer at this year\u2019s annual Tailhook Association convention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey asked me if I would be willing to do this and the answer was \u2018yes,\u2019\u201d retired Cmdr. Driscoll said after the ceremony last week. \u201cI represent naval aviation from the past. What we\u2019re looking at today is the naval aviation of the present and future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/10\/the-inside-story-of-how-a-us-navy-pilot-shot-down-a-syrian-jet\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Tremel-1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The inside story of how a US Navy pilot shot down a Syrian jet<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It was the American military&#039;s first shootdown of an enemy plane since 1999<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naval Flight Officer Driscoll and his F-4J Phantom pilot \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2014\/07\/disgraced-congressman-randy-duke-cunningham-is-a-free-man-again\/442878\/\" target=_blank>Randall \u201cDuke\u201d Cunningham <\/a>\u2014 shot down five North Vietnamese jets, including three MiGs during a single 1972 mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recipient of the <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.defense.gov\/description-of-awards\/\" target=_blank>Navy Cross<\/a>, the nation\u2019s second-highest award for battlefield valor, two Silver Stars and 10 Air Medals \u2014 plus the Purple Heart \u2014 Driscoll received his Naval Flight Officer wings in 1970 after completing advanced training at Naval Air Station Glynco in Georgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those wings meant so much to Driscoll that he made sure they mean something to Ensign Changdae Hahm, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Driscoll pinned Hahm with his own wings earned nearly a half-century ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s a legend in naval aviation,\u201d said Hahm, who was born in South Korea and raised in Colorado. \u201cTo have his wings on my chest is not only a lot of pressure, it\u2019s an honor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"719\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Driscoll2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-70818\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Driscoll2.jpg.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Driscoll2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,180 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Driscoll2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,460 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Driscoll2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,614 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">In 1972 at the Pentagon, then-Secretary of the Navy John W. Warner met with Lt. Randall H. Cunningham, Lt. j.g. William P. Driscoll and Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Elmo Zumwalt.  (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A U.S. Naval Academy grad, Hahm considered joining the Marines or becoming a submariner, but the lure of flying grabbed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to be outdone at Tailhook, retired Rear Adm. <a href=\"https:\/\/fightersweep.com\/837\/the-ultimate-carrier-break\/\" target=_blank>Mike \u201cNasty\u201d Manazir <\/a>also used the wings he earned in 1983 to pin pilot Lt. J.G. Blake Leming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The former commanding officer of both the \u201cTomcatters\u201d of Fighter Squadron 31 and the aircraft carrier Nimitz, Manazir recorded more than 1,200 arrested landings during 15 deployments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A cool moment at <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Hook18?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Hook18<\/a>.
