{"id":37737,"date":"2021-02-03T20:08:26","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T20:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/02\/03\/could-getting-the-covid-vaccine-ease-your-pre-deployment-quarantine\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:34:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:34:23","slug":"could-getting-the-covid-vaccine-ease-your-pre-deployment-quarantine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/02\/03\/could-getting-the-covid-vaccine-ease-your-pre-deployment-quarantine\/","title":{"rendered":"Could getting the COVID vaccine ease your pre-deployment quarantine?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An internal email sent out to members of a U.S. warship last month suggests that sailors who elect to receive COVID-19 vaccinations could receive less-strict pre-deployment quarantine in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Navy officials emphasize that any such policy change remains under consideration, an email sent out to the weapons department of the guided-missile destroyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/01\/29\/people-are-scared-covid-19-outbreak-rattles-crew-of-the-warship-chafee\/\" target=_blank>Chafee<\/a> last month and obtained by Navy Times lays out how vaccinated sailors could affect quarantine time before a unit deploys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The email, sent by the ship\u2019s weapons officer, states that \u2014 as of the Jan. 26 email \u2014 sailors who get vaccinated could undertake their two-week pre-deployment \u201cRestriction of Movement,\u201d or ROM, at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSailors that do not have the vaccine will have to ROM entirely on the ship,\u201d the email adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also states that vaccinated sailors would come to work and stand duty during ROM, but be able to go home when the workday was done, offering that much more time with loved ones before a deployment commences.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/02\/02\/this-is-why-so-few-troops-have-gotten-the-covid-19-vaccine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/navy-covid-vaccine.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This is why so few troops have gotten the COVID-19 vaccine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Defense Department has administered about half of the doses it has on-hand.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials declined to address the Chafee email regarding ROM and vaccine, but said in a statement that policies will be tweaked as the vaccine rolls out and more people get the jabs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the vaccine becomes more widely available and more information about the spread of COVID-19 within a vaccinated population becomes known, rules and policies both on and off-base may change, potentially affecting restriction of movement, leave and liberty policies,\u201d Cmdr. Myers Vasquez, a spokesman for U.S. Pacific Fleet, said. \u201cWe expect updated guidance in the coming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chafee recently suffered a COVID outbreak while transiting from Hawaii to San Diego for training. The ship\u2019s entire crew was placed into quarantine late last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are only approved as part of an emergency use authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Navy cannot force sailors to take the vaccine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department has declined to say precisely how many servicemembers have received the vaccine since they came online in December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#vaccinations\" target=_blank>COVID vaccination site<\/a> shows that 807,025 vaccine doses have been distributed to DOD, but that just 490,377 have been administered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But as of a few weeks ago, two out of three sailors who were offered the vaccine had taken it, according to a Jan. 19 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/reference\/messages\/Documents\/NAVADMINS\/NAV2021\/NAV21014.txt\" target=_blank>message to the fleet<\/a> by Vice Adm. Phil Sawyer, deputy chief of operations for operations, plans and strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/01\/29\/people-are-scared-covid-19-outbreak-rattles-crew-of-the-warship-chafee\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/chafee-sailors.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018People are scared\u2019: COVID-19 outbreak rattles crew of the warship Chafee<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">U.S. 3rd Fleet officials confirmed that some personnel had tested positive for the coronavirus on the guided-missile destroyer, but declined to say how many cases had emerged.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message told leaders to bring in medical personnel to answer any questions sailors had about the vaccines, and to consider conducting surveys to better assess reasons why sailors would decline the shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Surveys and all-hands messaging had increased the \u201ctake rate\u201d at one type community by 9 percent, Sawyer wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commands should consider a \u201cshot-exercise\u201d to ensure that those looking to get vaccinated move smoothly through their military medical facility, he wrote, and lists of those looking to get the vaccine should be provided to medical each day \u201cto ensure 100 percent utilization of thawed vials.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the military, the loss rate for vaccines \u201chas been negligible,\u201d Air Force Brig Gen. Paul Friedrichs, the Pentagon\u2019s joint staff surgeon, told Military Times last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe certainly have not lost any vaccines because they\u2019re sitting on the shelf,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the vaccine remains voluntary, Navy social media accounts and leadership have been nudging the fleet to get the shot when they become eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe COVID-19 vaccine will help stop the pandemic,\u201d Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Russell Smith said in a video with Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday late last month. \u201cSailors who have received the vaccine have stepped up and taken action to protect themselves, their shipmates, the Navy and our Nation.
