included a project dear to the Alaska congressional delegation: a new polar icebreaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spending bill includes<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsminer.com\/news\/alaska_news\/alaska-s-congressional-delegation-lauds-icebreaker-funding\/article_bdbb7286-35b3-11e9-bb08-170b4bf4b0f7.html\" target=_blank> $655 million for designing and building the icebreaker<\/a> for the Coast Guard, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsminer.com\/\" target=_blank>Fairbanks Daily News-Miner<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bill includes $20 million for materials to eventually build a second icebreaker and $740 million for new cutters, including six to be based in Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure also provides $53 million for cutter support facilities in the state, with $22 million for Kodiak and $31 million to Seward.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside with the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Office of Naval Research.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.murkowski.senate.gov\/\" target=_blank>Lisa Murkowski,<\/a> an Alaska Republican, called the bill a significant step in the right direction toward an icebreaker fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I have been pushing to fully fund the acquisition of a fleet of Arctic-capable icebreakers \u2014 because of the importance of this vessel for the safety and security of the Arctic region and for our national security as a whole,&#8221; Murkowski said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She called it a huge victory in her long fight to help fulfill America\u2019s responsibilities as an Arctic nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her GOP colleague in Alaska, Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sullivan.senate.gov\/\" target=_blank>Dan Sullivan<\/a>, also praised the funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Congress and the Trump administration are acknowledging that Alaska is America&#8217;s Arctic, a fact that is important to our broader national security interests,&#8221; he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
