The Navy also trains some Navy SEALs and ordinance disposal techs to be handlers, too.

Paige trains daily with his dog, Jaimy
[cq] as the two come together in a human and canine team.

“Training times vary and depends on the dog how long it takes to build that rapport,” he said. “Some it takes several days while others need a couple months.”

Their job, once a trained human and canine team, is to detect bombs and drugs and to augment security forces at Navy bases worldwide.

Paige’s goal is to eventually deploy overseas — downrange as he calls it — with a dog and do the job in a combat environment.

“That’s my goal and I’m working towards that every day,” he said, it’s been my goal since before I joined the Navy.”

For dog handlers who have done the job overseas — these deployments are what many handlers live for and can last up to a year.

“It was a great experience and I prefer that, being downrange and doing that mission rather than being on a base,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Joshua Abraham, a 10-year MA who has spent nearly seven years as a dog handler and deployed to Africa with his dog from December 2010 through November 2011.

“It’s more independent duty and you get to take nearly everything you’ve learned and put it to use — you work with smaller groups — in Africa I worked as part of a four dog and handler kennel and we all came from different base kennels.”

He’s been trying to get back downrange ever since and will soon deploy to Bahrain and hopes he’ll get another shot at some independent duty while there.

Abraham got to the school by a different route. After his seven weeks of “A” school, he reported for duty at Naval Air Station, Atsugi, Japan and says he set his eyes on being a working dog from the moment he got to the base.

That’s been the case for many other handlers, who choose first to get their feet wet as “strait stick” Navy cops and learning the rating before going to the dogs.

Those sailors often first spend time as Navy cops, patrolling bases and then work their way into the kennel doing a kennel support job — helping out with the dogs, but not yet training dogs themselves.

“I wanted to be a working dog handler, but one of my chief’s at school recommended that I spend some time in the fleet learning to be a regular MA, first,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class David Fuller “I listened and in the log run, I feel it was the best decision to learn that job first.”

Fuller is currently working with his dog, Misa
[cq], out of the Dam Neck kennel and enjoys the work immensely, saying there’s nothing like “leveling up a dog,” kennel slang for taking a dog and training them up to be the best working dogs they can become.

“My whole day is spent with this dog,” he said. “I feel more of a bond with her than I do with most people.”

And all handlers say that bond and relationship they build with the dog is the best and worst part of the job. Abraham says during his seven years as a handler, he’s “worked” six different dogs and remembers each one of them.

“You spend so much time with a dog and you work hard to train them and you’re at your best when you develop a bond as a team,” Abraham said. “It’s great when you’re together, but for me, the hardest thing about this job is seeing someone else working your dog.”

Regardless of how they get there, entry to the military working dog handler program is at the Department of Defense’s school operated by the Air Force’s 341st Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. The squadron is responsible for procuring, assigning and shipping all dogs for the MWD program.

The school teaches handlers from not only the Navy, but from the Army, Marine Corps and Air Force. Paige said the joint environment made the course more interesting and worthwhile for him as he learned how the other services operate.

Working dog trainers are in high demand in the Navy and the civilian world — a fact that has caused the Navy to start offering re-up bonuses to first-term MA’s who hold the MA-2005 Navy Enlisted Classification assigned to working dog handlers. Under current payout rates, a second class petty officer with over four but less than six years of service can get over $15,500 if they sign up for a six year second hitch.

But if the goal is to get the skill and try your luck on the civilian market, the Navy also offers an apprenticeship program under which sailors can complete a civilian apprenticeship resulting in a journeyman level of certification. Sailors complete the qualifications while performing their day to day jobs as working dog handlers and requires 2500-hours of documented experience to complete.

The certification is one of 10 available for Navy MA’s and is operated by the U.S. Military Apprenticeship Program with the help of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Every military working dog needs a handler — and Navy masters-at-arms, and other specialties, can train to be one
