{"id":38274,"date":"2019-07-01T17:54:50","date_gmt":"2019-07-01T17:54:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/07\/01\/two-special-operations-osprey-squadrons-stand-up-at-yokota-air-base\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:12:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:12:02","slug":"two-special-operations-osprey-squadrons-stand-up-at-yokota-air-base","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/2019\/07\/01\/two-special-operations-osprey-squadrons-stand-up-at-yokota-air-base\/","title":{"rendered":"Two special operations Osprey squadrons stand up at Yokota AB"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force has activated two new special operations squadrons in Japan that will operate and maintain the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/2019\/02\/11\/air-force-ospreys-spotted-in-vietnam-for-first-time\/\" target=_blank>CV-22 Osprey<\/a> tiltrotor aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force Special Operations Command\u2019s 353rd Special Operations Group at Kadena Air Base in Japan stood up the 21st Special Operations Squadron and the 753rd Special Operations Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Monday at at Yokota Air Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft, designed to carry out infiltration, exfiltration and resupply missions for special operations forces, are stationed at Yokota to enhance security, disaster preparedness, and emergency airlift capability in crisis situations, according to the Air Force Special Operations Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Air Commandos that will fly, maintain and support this mission will deliver a one-of-a-kind, vertical-lift capability unmatched by other fixed- or rotary-wing platforms,\u201d Air Force Special Operations commander Lt. Gen. Jim Slife said in a statement Monday. \u201cThis platform\u2019s combination of speed, range and operational flexibility affords U.S. Indo-Pacific Command unparalleled special operations capabilities in the region as part of America\u2019s commitment to Japan\u2019s defense and regional peace and security as outlined in our National Defense Strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 21st Special Operation Squadron last had an active assignment from 1988-2007. Lt. Col. Jason Hock, 21st Special Operations Squadron commander, said the squadron was thrilled to continue the unit\u2019s legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Air Commandos of this squadron are so proud to carry forward the legacy of those that came before us,\u201d Hock said in a statement. \u201cWe will deliver an unmatched capability to the theater and do it safely and in cooperation with our Japanese and regional partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The release did not disclose how many personnel were assigned to the units, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/pacific\/special-operations-osprey-squadrons-stand-up-at-us-air-base-in-tokyo-1.588311\" target=\"_blank\">Stars &amp; Stripes<\/a> reported that during the ceremony Monday, Hock said the long-term goal is to have 10 Ospreys supported by 450 personnel at Yokota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the CV-22 Ospreys have attracted scrutiny from those who live near Yokota Air Base for the noise they produce, Hock said that the units will avoid disrupting nearby residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are not here to make a lot of noise,\u201d Hock said, according to Stars &amp; Stripes. \u201cWe are not here to disturb anyone.
