{"id":38822,"date":"2021-12-11T21:02:36","date_gmt":"2021-12-11T21:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/12\/11\/army-navy-game-halftime-prisoner-exchange-includes-one-of-two-rival-service-academy-brothers\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:09:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:09:15","slug":"army-navy-game-halftime-prisoner-exchange-includes-one-of-two-rival-service-academy-brothers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/12\/11\/army-navy-game-halftime-prisoner-exchange-includes-one-of-two-rival-service-academy-brothers\/","title":{"rendered":"Army Navy Game \u2018prisoner exchange\u2019 includes one of two rival service academy brothers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USS INTREPID, HUDSON RIVER, NEW YORK \u2013 At this year\u2019s Army Navy Game, a long-standing tradition will continue, the \u201cPrisoner Exchange\u201d in which cadets and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/09\/a-generation-apart-2-naval-academy-football-alumni-used-experiences-to-fuel-future-careers\/\" target=\"_blank\">midshipmen<\/a> who have spent the previous semester at the opposite academy meet at midfield and are \u201creturned\u201d to their respective academies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military Times talked with one such prisoner, a U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman and his twin brother, a U.S. Military Academy at West Point cadet, ahead of the game.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/12\/08\/west-point-grad-pranks-navy-alumni-ahead-of-annual-army-navy-game\/?fb_comment_id=1949325951818025_1952260558191231&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&#038;contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fyour-military%22%2C%22from%22%3A105%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">West Point grad pranks Navy alumni ahead of annual Army Navy game<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/california-twin-brothers-us-military-academies\" target=\"_blank\">Lowe brothers<\/a> had some military service among their relatives, one great grandfather served in the Navy as an officer during World War II and made a 30-year career with the service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another great grandfather enlisted in Army and served in the infantry in World War II. A grandfather was an officer in the Navy during the Vietnam War while another grandfather served as enlisted in the Air Force in the late 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite that service, the men didn\u2019t know much about the service academies until in their sophomore year at Trabuco Hills High School in Mission Viejo, California they saw one of their teachers putting up fliers around the school about the service academies. They were good students, played sports and were involved in Boy Scouts, so they figured they might be good candidates. And they\u2019d always talked about maybe going to the same college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that\u2019s not exactly what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Navy is a great service, but to me the diversity of opportunity in the Army, I felt that West Point was going to present a challenge as would life in the Army,\u201d said Cadet Joshua Lowe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midshipman Jacob Lowe was drawn to the Naval Academy for similar reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor me, looking at four career choices, Surface Warfare Officer, aviation, submarines and the Marines, any of those coming out of the Naval Academy would be challenging,\u201d Jacob Lowe said. \u201cBut naval aviation is my top choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joshua Lowe is studying economics and is working for an assignment eventually to the 75th Ranger Regiment with an eye on much of the advanced training and schools such a posting would offer, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacob Lowe, is studying weapons, robotics and control engineering and hope to make it into the fixed wing side of naval aviation, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s Jacob, the midshipman, who has spent the past semester as an exchange student at West Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5127\" height=\"3418\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-73526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg 5127w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/LoweFamilyXmasPhoto.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5127px) 100vw, 5127px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">U.S. Naval Academy Midshipman Jacob Lowe, left, father Dave Lowe, second from left, mother Jen Lowe, third from left, and U.S. Military Academy Cadet Joshua Lowe, right are a military service academy family after the twin brothers elected to attend their respective service academies out of high school. (Photo courtesy of the Lowe family)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He\u2019ll be one of seven midshipmen at center field during the game for the prisoner exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When both of the southern California boys arrived on the east coast for the summer before they started classes the football game rivalry was at the forefront of the training cadre\u2019s messaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was Go Army, Beat Navy! During that week-long event,\u201d Joshua said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everywhere he went, months away from that year\u2019s actual game there was the Beat Navy tunnel, Beat Navy bread in the mess hall, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His twin Jacob saw the same further south in Annapolis, Maryland, where the Naval Academy drilled that rivalry thinking, impressing upon the young man that they\u2019re allies all year except for a few hours on that one day of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the first year didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cadets at the schools unfurl banners that say Beat Army or Beat Navy from their dormitory rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The West Point cadets erect a wooden ship the week ahead of the game on campus and burn it to ashes during a later pep rally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the cooks in the mess hall serve chow saying \u201cGo Army, Beat Navy,\u201d Joshua said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his plebeian, or freshman year, Jacob said upperclassmen would take furniture and other items out of their rooms and haul them two miles away, instructing the newbies that they had to get their room back in order before Taps played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And while each of the football team\u2019s home games was instantly special and marked the season, nothing quite compares to the big rivalry, they both said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That first semester was unique for the pair, who\u2019d been together since birth and apart for those trying months at their schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first semester I was away from my brother, we did link up at halftime for a couple of minutes,\u201d Joshua said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacob marked the halftime mix as a highlight of the week as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe environment at halftime, the mingling of the two schools, every cadet in gray, the midshipmen in their black uniforms,\u201d Jacob said. \u201cThere are relationships, cousins, brothers, close friends, we don\u2019t have a lot of time to say high but it\u2019s a unique opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what do their parents do with this \u201chouse divided\u201d?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mom and dad each wear one of the son\u2019s respective colors and the next year they switch sides, just to keep it even.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And after the prisoner exchange, when Jacob returns to his Navy comrades, he doesn\u2019t exactly get to ride the bus back to Annapolis. He\u2019s still got his things up in West Point. So, he\u2019ll rejoin his brother for the trek to West Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s almost a certainty one will be happy, the other not-so-much, following the results of the 2021 matchup.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Note: Travel accommodations for Army Navy Game coverage were provided by USAA, a military-focused insurance
