That\u2019s an area that U.S. military commanders see as critical to holding off an Islamic State resurgence in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even as Trump heralded his push to pull nearly all U.S. troops out of what he derided as the \u201cblood-stained sands\u201d of Syria, he\u2019s repeatedly referred to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2019\/10\/21\/some-american-troops-may-stay-in-syria-to-guard-oil-fields-esper-says\/\" target=_blank>the country\u2019s oil fields <\/a>as prized land that he\u2019s intent on protecting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve secured the oil, and, therefore, a small number of U.S. troops will remain in the area where they have the oil,\u201d Trump said Wednesday while discussing the pullout of all but 200 to 300 U.S. troops in Syria. \u201cAnd we\u2019re going to be protecting it, and we\u2019ll be deciding what we\u2019re going to do with it in the future.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House officials did not respond to requests for greater clarity about Trump\u2019s tweet suggesting Kurds head to the oil region. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2019\/10\/22\/us-military-struggles-to-find-a-strategy-amid-sudden-policy-changes-in-centcom-region\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1177221337.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US military struggles to find a strategy amid sudden policy changes in CENTCOM region<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The future of the five-year fight against Islamic State militants is unclear, along with the entire strategy underpinning the U.S. troop presence in the U.S. Central Command region.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon released a statement Thursday saying it is committed to sending additional military forces to eastern Syria to \u201creinforce\u201d control of the oil fields and prevent them from \u201cfalling back to into the hands of ISIS or other destabilizing actors.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No details were provided on how many or what kind of forces would be sent, or whether decisions on those details have been made. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s decision to withdraw the bulk of roughly 1,000 American troops from Syria drew bipartisan condemnation. The decision came after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Trump earlier this month that he intended to carry out an operation to clear the Turkey-Syria border of Kurdish fighters who fought side-by-side with U.S. troops in beating back IS fighters in northeast Syria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The president\u2019s comments this week raised fresh concerns that he has an incomplete understanding, or is indifferent to, the fragile dynamics of the region, his critics say. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe President of the United States of America appears to be calling for a mass migration of Kurds to the desert where they can resettle atop a tiny oil field,\u201d Brett McGurk, Trump\u2019s former special envoy to the global coalition to defeat IS, wrote on Twitter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the idea of keeping troops in eastern Syria to guard the oil fields resonated with Trump and presented military commanders with a way to keep at least a residual force inside the country. In addition to a presence near the oil fields in eastern Syria, some U.S. forces will remain in southern Syria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Secretary Mark Esper said the main goal of the American troop presence is to make sure the Islamic State is contained and unable to gain control of the oil fields and the revenue they generate. The administration also sees some benefit to Kurds being in control of the oil, according to a senior administration official, who briefed reporters on the administration\u2019s deliberations on the Syria withdrawal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Oil Fields discussed in my speech on Turkey\/Kurds yesterday were held by ISIS until the United States took them over with the help of the Kurds,\u201d Trump said in another tweet Thursday. \u201cWe will NEVER let a reconstituted ISIS have those fields!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eastern Syria is the center for what remains of Syria\u2019s oil industry, which although in shambles, remains one of the main sources of revenues for the Kurdish-led administration there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kurdish forces seized control of small oil fields in northeastern Hassakeh province after the government pulled out of most of the Kurdish-majority regions in 2012 to fight rebels elsewhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After expelling Islamic State militants from southeastern Syria in 2018, the Kurds seized control of the more profitable oil fields in Deir el-Zour province. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quiet arrangement has existed between the Kurds and the Syrian government, whereby Damascus buys the surplus through middlemen in a profitable smuggling operation that has continued despite political differences. The Kurdish-led administration sells crude oil to private refiners, who use primitive homemade refineries to process fuel and diesel and sell it back to the administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The oil was expected to be a bargaining chip for the Kurds to negotiate a deal with the Syrian government, which unsuccessfully tried to reach the oil fields to retake them from IS. With Trump saying he plans to keep forces to secure the oil, it seems the oil will continue to be used for leverage \u2014 with Moscow and Damascus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the war, Syria produced around 350,000 barrels per day, exporting more than half of it. Most of that oil came from eastern Syria. Foreign companies, including Total, Shell, and Conoco, all left Syria after the war began more than eight years ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said after meeting with Trump on Thursday that he urged him to stay engaged in Syria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you can find a way to secure the oil fields from Iran and ISIS, that\u2019s in our national security interest,\u201d Graham said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>AP National Security Writer Robert Burns contributed to
