{"id":39608,"date":"2017-04-22T16:40:29","date_gmt":"2017-04-22T16:40:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/04\/22\/military-moves-2017-13-tips-for-your-next-pcs\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:56:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:56:00","slug":"military-moves-2017-13-tips-for-your-next-pcs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/spouse\/2017\/04\/22\/military-moves-2017-13-tips-for-your-next-pcs\/","title":{"rendered":"13 tips for your next PCS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We asked those in the moving industry\u00a0who work with military families, and\u00a0those in the Defense Department agency\u00a0that oversees military moves, for advice\u00a0on what service members and families\u00a0can do to make their household goods\u00a0move as smooth as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>Before outlining some of their tips, one point bears repeating: The most important thing you can do is start the official process as soon as you get your official military orders, either online through <a class=\"selected-link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.move.mil\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" data-original-title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.move.mil\" aria-describedby=\"popover336514\">Move.mil<\/a> or at your installation household goods\/transportation office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>More for your pre-move to-do list:<br> <br> <b>1. Know your rights. <\/b>Explore the information on Move.mil \u2013 items designed to help you make the move process as easy as possible. Read the new &#8220;<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.move.mil\/documents\/DP3_Customer_Bill_Rights.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\">Customer Bill of Rights<\/a>&#8221; from the DoD Personal Property Program; it will familiarize you with your rights and responsibilities during a move, and what actions you can take based on your entitlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>For example, did you know that you\u00a0have the right to have the mover unpack\u00a0items and reassemble items within your\u00a0residence on the day of delivery? That\u00a0you have the right to have the mover\u00a0remove unpacked containers, packing\u00a0materials and other moving debris on\u00a0the day of delivery at no cost? Knowing\u00a0some of these things ahead of time could\u00a0make it easier when you&#8217;re extremely\u00a0busy with relocation-related tasks.<br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>2. Get a head start.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re in the\u00a0window for a permanent change-of-station\u00a0move this spring or summer,\u00a0you can go to Move.mil and update\u00a0your information even if you don\u2019t have\u00a0your orders. You can also set up your\u00a0new account, said Air Force Lt. Col.\u00a0Todd Jensen, personal property director<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">at Surface Deployment and Distribution\u00a0Command, which manages the military\u00a0move process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Make sure they have the best contact\u00a0information to reach you 24 hours a day\u00a0throughout the moving process. You can\u00a0change that information as needed and\u00a0iron out any problems with the system\u00a0ahead of time, even though you can&#8217;t\u00a0start the booking process until you get\u00a0your orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>If you know you&#8217;ll be moving and you&#8217;re a sailor or another service member who may get less than two months&#8217; notice before the move, talk to your household goods office to see if there&#8217;s anything they want you to do before you get orders, said John Becker, director of military policy for the American Moving and Storage Association.<br> <br> <i>Also read: <\/i> <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/articles\/military-moves-2017-system-concerns-mover-shortages-make-early-scheduling-critical\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/articles\/military-moves-2017-system-concerns-mover-shortages-make-early-scheduling-critical\"><i>Military moves 2017: System concerns, mover shortages make early scheduling critical<\/i><\/a> <i> and <\/i> <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/articles\/military-moves-2017-doing-it-yourself-tips-for-personally-procured-moves\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Military Moves 2017: Doing it yourself? Tips for personally procured moves<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/> <b>3. Be flexible with moving dates.\u00a0<\/b>&#8220;This is especially true if they&#8217;re\u00a0planning to move anywhere from\u00a0late May through mid-July,&#8221; said Charles\u00a0White, senior vice president of the International\u00a0Association of Movers. That\u00a0flexibility doesn&#8217;t just mean Tuesday or\u00a0Wednesday of a particular week \u2013 there<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">needs to be a spread of weeks.<br\/> <br\/>It&#8217;s tricky when you&#8217;re trying to juggle\u00a0giving notice to your landlord, or especially\u00a0if you&#8217;re selling a house, but if you\u00a0lock yourself into a single move date\u00a0based on decisions already made, you\u00a0may put yourself in a bind if you can&#8217;t\u00a0get that date. Consider some options\u00a0that the military offers to help you, such\u00a0as lodging allowances.<br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>4. Know your weight allowance.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can find it <a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.move.mil\/dod\/before_you_begin\/weight_allowance.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0Although\u00a0not widespread, some service members\u00a0have found out they\u2019ve had to pay extra\u00a0because they exceeded their weight\u00a0allowance, Jensen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Service members also have a right to\u00a0ask their moving company or military\u00a0transportation office for a re-weigh of\u00a0their household goods, and they have a\u00a0right to be present when that re-weigh is\u00a0conducted.<br\/> <br\/> <b>5. Get a history lesson. <\/b>Check out\u00a0your past moves in your Move.mil\u00a0account to learn the weight of your\u00a0previous shipments. That will help you\u00a0prepare as you consider your current\u00a0weight allowance and decide if you&#8217;ve\u00a0added or subtracted stuff since your last\u00a0relocation. Still not sure? Use the Move.mil weight estimator (it&#8217;s an<a class=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.move.mil\/documents\/dod\/weightestimator.xls\" target=\"_blank\">Excel file<\/a>).<br\/> <br\/> <b>6. Don&#8217;t move what you don&#8217;t\u00a0<\/b> <b>want. <\/b>It&#8217;s never too early to start\u00a0culling items. Consider a yard sale,\u00a0or donate some items to charity. Why\u00a0go to the extra trouble and expense to\u00a0move rarely used items?<br\/> <br\/> <b>7. Prep your car. <\/b>If you&#8217;re moving\u00a0overseas, make sure your vehicle is\u00a0ready, Jensen said. Document the\u00a0condition of your vehicle and get any repairs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">done that are needed to ensure the car is mechanically sound. If there are\u00a0any outstanding recalls on your vehicle,\u00a0take the vehicle to the dealer and get<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">those fixes done \u2013 otherwise, your vehicle\u00a0may be turned away from the vehicle\u00a0processing center.<br\/> <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>8. Make a value assessment.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start\u00a0documenting high-value items and\u00a0start gathering what you\u2019ll carry\u00a0with you \u2013 items such as passports,\u00a0valuable jewelry, marriage license, birth\u00a0certificates, medicines, and so on. It\u2019s not\u00a0just monetary value that counts, Jensen\u00a0said \u2013 consider emotional worth, too, as\u00a0well as how long it might take to replace\u00a0things like birth certificates or other\u00a0critical documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Start thinking about the clothes you&#8217;ll\u00a0take with you, and how long it will take\u00a0your household goods to get to your new\u00a0location. Before the movers come, you&#8217;ll\u00a0want to set those items aside in a closet\u00a0or room marked off-limits to the movers,\u00a0or maybe in the trunk of your car.<br\/> <br\/> <b>9. Get personal. And professional.\u00a0<\/b>Separate the professional items\u00a0you&#8217;re moving so that movers can\u00a0note the weight. If these items qualify as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">professional items, also known as Pro-Gear, they don&#8217;t count against your total\u00a0household goods items.<br\/> <br\/> <b>10. Film a documentary. <\/b>Consider\u00a0using your cellphone\u00a0to document your items, and\u00a0the condition of those items, by going\u00a0room to room and taking video of what\u00a0you find. Describe the items as you&#8217;re\u00a0recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>11. Read the directions.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As\u00a0you\u2019re going through the\u00a0process at Move.mil, don\u2019t just\u00a0click through the pages without reading\u00a0the information, Becker said. There\u00a0may have been changes that affect your\u00a0particular move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>12. Read the inventory.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Some\u00a0people will just sign it on\u00a0departure,&#8221; Jensen said. &#8220;If\u00a0you want something on the inventory,\u00a0you need to tell the movers you want\u00a0documentation reflecting what\u2019s in a box\u00a0or carton.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>13. Ask away.<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have questions\u00a0about what the moving\u00a0company is doing, or what\u00a0they\u2019re telling you, check with your\u00a0household goods\/transportation office.\u00a0Go to the same office with questions that\u00a0crop up while you\u2019re requesting your\u00a0move in Move.mil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/>Keep the contact information for the\u00a0office with you while en route \u2013 it&#8217;s\u00a0available at Move.mil and at MilitaryOneSource.mil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br\/> <i>Karen Jowers covers military families, quality of life and consumer issues for Military Times.
