{"id":40826,"date":"2022-04-18T21:47:52","date_gmt":"2022-04-18T21:47:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/04\/18\/destroyers-mitscher-the-sullivans-conclude-surge-deployments-to-6th-fleet\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T12:32:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T12:32:43","slug":"destroyers-mitscher-the-sullivans-conclude-surge-deployments-to-6th-fleet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/04\/18\/destroyers-mitscher-the-sullivans-conclude-surge-deployments-to-6th-fleet\/","title":{"rendered":"Destroyers Mitscher, The Sullivans conclude surge deployments to 6th Fleet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Guided-missile destroyers Mitscher and The Sullivans have wrapped up their surge deployments to U.S. 6th Fleet after getting underway in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The destroyers were among four that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/02\/11\/navy-deploys-four-destroyers-to-6th-fleet-to-support-nato-allies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy deployed in early 2022<\/a> to participate in a variety of maritime activities supporting the U.S. 6th Fleet and NATO allies to provide them additional flexibility, according to Navy spokesman Cmdr. Arlo Abrahamson. The Gonzalez and Donald Cook were also deployed to the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said at the time the deployments were not in response to any actions or anticipated actions from Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/09\/22\/uss-monterey-and-uss-mitscher-return-to-norfolk-after-nine-month-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mitscher\u2019s deployment<\/a>, the destroyer supported the Harry S. Truman and its strike group, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/01\/22\/harry-s-truman-carrier-strike-group-nato-allies-to-launch-exercise-in-mediterranean\/\" target=\"_blank\">deployed in December 2021<\/a>, to conduct operations with the Greek, Italian, Norwegian and Turkish navies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo nation can confront today\u2019s challenges alone,\u201d Cmdr. Thomas McCandless, commanding officer of Mitscher, said in a Navy news release. \u201cA more resilient and rapidly innovating Navy, combined with a robust set of allies and partners, demonstrate NATO\u2019s commitment to a free and open global commons. I can say without a doubt that our crew rose to the task. With a 10-day notice, Mitscher was able to onload ammunition and deploy with ease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sullivans participated in NATO Exercise Dynamic Guard 2022, an electronic warfare exercise, in the North Sea in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recent deployments came months after both ships had wrapped up 2021 deployments. The Mitscher\u2019s last deployment supporting the Dwight D. prepare the ship and crew for future tasking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mitscher arrived at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, April 16, and The Sullivans pulled into Naval
