{"id":40907,"date":"2018-11-04T22:43:20","date_gmt":"2018-11-04T22:43:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/11\/04\/amphibious-warship-ashland-marines-toil-to-save-tinian\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:01:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:01:10","slug":"amphibious-warship-ashland-marines-toil-to-save-tinian","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/04\/amphibious-warship-ashland-marines-toil-to-save-tinian\/","title":{"rendered":"Amphibious warship Ashland, Marines, toil to save Tinian"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of devastating Super Typhoon Yutu, the Navy diverted the amphibious warship <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/lsd48\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Ashland<\/a>, ordered her crew to embark the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit on Okinawa, and then rushed south to save the ravaged island of Tinian. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Oct. 25, the Category 5 storm tore across the southern slab of Saipan but speared directly into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Tinian\" target=_blank>Tinian<\/a>, part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.mp\/\" target=_blank>Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operating about 100 miles away out of Guam, Coast Guard cutters, the \u201cIsland Knights\u201d of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 25 and detachment of Seabees<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/10\/27\/military-forces-from-hawaii-to-guam-pitch-in-to-save-saipan-tinian-in-the-wake-of-super-typhoon\/\" target=_blank> immediately began helping<\/a> thousands of Americans without electricity, water or shelter. But far more aid was needed, so the 7th Fleet in Japan took the rescue call. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rear Adm. Brad Cooper, the commander of Amphibious Force 7th Fleet, directed the Ashland to return to the Marianas. It wasn\u2019t an unknown island on the map. Cooper, the Ashland and the MEU had just left. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cooper led the military\u2019s recovery operations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/13\/overshadowed-by-florence-navy-and-marines-race-to-save-typhoon-ravaged-rota\/\" target=_blank>on the nearby island of Rota<\/a> after Typhoon Mangkhut walloped it on Sept. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHaving seen the extreme damage caused by the typhoon on both Tinian and Saipan, I couldn\u2019t be prouder of all the work that our sailors and Marines are doing to help our fellow American citizens,\u201d said Cooper in a Saturday email to Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/09\/13\/overshadowed-by-florence-navy-and-marines-race-to-save-typhoon-ravaged-rota\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RotaTF1.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Overshadowed by Florence, Navy and Marines race to save typhoon-ravaged Rota<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Packing winds higher than 201 miles per hour and driving waves 50-feet high, the eye of Super Typhoon Mangkhut is now about 500 miles west of Manila on a trek to tear apart the northern Philippines, destroying rice crops and pancaking houses in a rural region that\u2019s home to 10 million residents.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yutu\u2019s devastation was far worse, but the Marines on the ground say ongoing relief efforts are helping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe people of Tinian are very resilient. The super typhoon had devastating effects on the island,\u201d said 2nd Lt. Maxwell Bennett, spokesman for the 31st MEU, in a Saturday night statement to Navy Times. &#8220;Landscape and the infrastructure had been ripped from the foundations and strewn everywhere. The majority of power lines across the island had been shattered and toppled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;However, the landscape has completely changed over the course of five days of debris clean-up. The roads are cleared, people now have access to clean water and gasoline. There has been a dramatic change in atmosphere as well, people are beginning to go back outside and utilize their roads again. Those without homes have already started receiving temporary tents for shelter. White\/Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MEU\u2019s commander, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.31stmeu.marines.mil\/About\/Leadership\/Commanding-Officer\/\" target=\"_blank\">Col. Robert \u201cBams\u201d Brodie<\/a>, is helming all Department of Defense efforts on Tinian, including coordinating with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/seabee\/nmcb1\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 1<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacaf.af.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pacific Air Forces<\/a> and personnel from the Army Corps of Engineers on the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of his best tools is the Ashland, the eighth and the last of the Whidbey Island-class dock landing ships to be commissioned 26 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her two landing craft utility vessels from Navy Beach Unit 7 already have delivered almost 50 vehicles to the 31st MEU, according to Capt. It all depends on what the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Commonwealth officials ask the Navy to provide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is an important mission and we
