Vincent W. Segars and Cmdr. Joshua \u201cWITS\u201d Fuller were flying in a Piper Turbo Lance II late Wednesday afternoon when they declared an in-air emergency and made their way to Craig Field, a private airport, according to Navy officials and Dallas County, Alabama, Coroner William Dailey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They were the only two on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane was flying from Jasper, Alabama, back to Pensacola, Florida, when the crash occurred, which Dailey described as a \u201chigh-velocity impact with the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It crashed about 5 miles out from the field, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/05\/22\/inside-a-fatal-super-hornet-crash-in-star-wars-canyon\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/rainbowcanyonjet.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Inside a fatal Super Hornet crash in Star Wars canyon<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The crash last summer killed Lt. Charles Walker and injured seven French tourists.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First responders were called to the scene at 4:37 p.m., he said, and a crop duster in the air at the time was able to quickly point responders to the crash site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn so many times it takes some time to locate the crash,\u201d Dailey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are saddened by the deaths of Capt. Vincent Segars\u2026and Cmdr. Joshua Fuller,\u201d Cmdr. James Stockman, a spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/netc\/Default.aspx\" target=_blank>Naval Education and Training Command<\/a>, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are coordinating with the Federal Aviation Administration and local law enforcement to conduct an investigation,\u201d he said. \u201cWe cannot provide any additional information as this is an ongoing investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NTSB_Newsroom\/status\/1270868446595747842\" target=_blank>via Twitter<\/a> that it is investigating the crash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Originally from South Carolina, Segars had led the Aviation Schools Command since April 2018, according to service records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Retired Navy captain and fellow aviator Baron Reinhold wrote on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/baron.reinhold\/posts\/10157156519081720\" target=_blank>Facebook<\/a> Thursday that he was \u201covercome with grief\u201d over the loss of Segars, a man he called \u201cmy retirement speaker, dearest friend, and the best Naval officer I\u2019ve ever known.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEveryone that knew Vince respected him,\u201d Reinhold wrote. \u201cHe was a man of conviction and lived with a sense of purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Florida native, Fuller would have hit the 20-year anniversary of his commissioning later this month, according to service records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had arrived at Naval Aviation Schools Command in November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before that, he commanded Training Squadron 86, also in Pensacola.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs I make my final approach toward the end of my career, I am honored to have helped shape the future of Naval Aviation and that\u2019s something I will treasure,\u201d Fuller said as he handed over the reins of VT 86 during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=111501\" target=_blank>change-of-command ceremony<\/a> in November. \u201cThe Navy\u2019s mission success depends on the exceptional men and women among its ranks and there are none greater than the Sabrehawks I served alongside here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fuller \u201cbrought a real sense of family to the squadron, and that can make a difference between a good tour and a great tour,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnatra.navy.mil\/tw6\/commodore.asp\" target=_blank>Capt. Scott Janik<\/a>, the commodore of Training Air Wing 6, said at the ceremony. \u201cA consummate professional, I could always trust him to make the right decisions for the good of the
