{"id":41344,"date":"2019-05-31T01:09:57","date_gmt":"2019-05-31T01:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smg.go-vip.net\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/05\/31\/navy-votes-down-the-sit-up-for-prt\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:00:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:00:24","slug":"navy-votes-down-the-sit-up-for-prt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/05\/31\/navy-votes-down-the-sit-up-for-prt\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy votes down the sit-up for PRT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy will shake up its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/support\/21st_century_sailor\/physical\/Pages\/default2.aspx\" target=_blank>physical readiness test<\/a> by nixing sit-ups and letting sailors use a rowing machine for their cardio scores, the sea service\u2019s top officer announced Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don\u2019t expect to see the changes on your next PRT. The reforms are still being developed and the Navy\u2019s goal is have the changes institutionalized by the second fitness test cycle in July 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson made the announcement in a video posted on his official Facebook page. He was flanked by both Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Russ Smith and the crew of the guided-missile destroyer John Paul Jones after a physical training session in Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to eliminate the sit-ups, because those things have been shown to do more harm than good and not really a good test of your core strength,\u201d Richardson declared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, Richardson said his service will introduce a \u201cplank event.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/24\/not-your-daddys-boot-camp-why-great-lakes-got-tougher-2\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Lakes3.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Not your daddy\u2019s boot camp \u2014 why Great Lakes got tougher<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Over the past 14 months, Navy leaders have made recruit training tougher. Senior leaders told Navy Times that they\u2019ve revamped more than 60 percent of the eight-week curriculum to return the enlisted rite of passage to the gritty fundamentals of physical fitness, standing watch and waging war at sea.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planks are considered better for a sailor\u2019s body because the movements don\u2019t exacerbate lower back injuries, a problem physical fitness experts have identified with sit-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe plank is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/staying-healthy\/want-a-stronger-core-skip-the-sit-ups\" target=\"_blank\"> a better test of core strength<\/a> and endurance and will likely reduce lower back injuries or strain due to poor form when doing the curl-up,\u201d said Lt. j.g Stuart Phillips, a spokesman for the chief of naval personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no data that supports curl-ups are the cause of lower back injuries. However, they may aggravate pre-existing conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An isometric core strength exercise, planks don\u2019t require sailors to flex muscle and joints while performing the movements. Instead, sailors begin the exercise in a position similar to a push-up, except the arms are fully extended and the body\u2019s weight rests on the elbows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy continues to develop the plank portion of the PRT by charting the \u201cperformance norms\u201d that sailors would have to achieve at all ages, Phillips said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraining for the plank strengthens the core, improves posture and reduces risk of lower back injuries,\u201d Phillips said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training for the event will be simple; costs will be minimal; and it\u2019s logistically feasible to test on board ships, submarines and ashore, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/05\/the-corps-is-considering-planks-as-an-alternative-to-crunches-on-the-pft\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine Corps<\/a> announced it was investigating a switch from crunches to planks on its physical fitness test, with a decision expected by 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has been mulling a move to planks since at least 2016, when then-Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Mike Stevens considered instituting it as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/02\/28\/this-is-the-navy-fitness-test-that-mcpon-wants\/\" target=_blank>radical shipboard skill-related fitness test<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4895\" height=\"3263\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-76636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg 4895w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PRT.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4895px) 100vw, 4895px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier Gerald R. (Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Brett Walker\/Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sit-up has been a staple of the Navy\u2019s semi-annual PRT for three decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Performance is easy to measure \u2014 a partner holds a sailor\u2019s legs and counts how many sit-ups are completed in two minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sailors also perform push-ups and often follow them up with a 1 1\/2-mile road run, but the PRT varies by command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/support\/21st_Century_Sailor\/physical\/Documents\/Guide%2010-%20Alternate%20Cardio%20Options%20Procedures%202018%20(F).pdf\" target=_blank>fitness instruction<\/a> indicates that the road run \u201cremains standard for testing cardio-respiratory fitness\u201d but it allows commanding officers to use \u201calternate cardio\u201d methods, including jogging on a treadmill, swimming and peddling a stationary bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adm. Richardson said the Navy plans to make the rowing machine a fourth \u201calternate cardio\u201d testing option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His reform comes two years after the Navy canceled the elliptical option because only 4 percent of those testing opted for that method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor all you commands that have rowing machines for your cardio, we\u2019re going to add a rowing machine on to the test as well,&#8221; Richardson said. &#8220;So if you have a rowing machine, you can do that for your cardio.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phillips said that test will simulate rowing a boat for two kilometers.
