{"id":41605,"date":"2019-08-20T15:42:26","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T15:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/08\/20\/after-russian-navy-nuke-site-explosion-moscow-resumes-radiation-info-sharing\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:38:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:38:33","slug":"after-russian-navy-nuke-site-explosion-moscow-resumes-radiation-info-sharing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/20\/after-russian-navy-nuke-site-explosion-moscow-resumes-radiation-info-sharing\/","title":{"rendered":"After Russian navy nuke site explosion, Moscow resumes radiation info sharing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MOSCOW \u2014 Russia has resumed sharing data from its radiation monitoring stations in Siberia after some were taken offline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/13\/russia-orders-evacuation-near-navy-nuke-site-then-cancels-it\/\" target=_blank>following a deadly explosion at a missile range<\/a>, a nuclear weapons watchdog said Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/12\/russia-buries-5-nuke-engineers-following-explosion\/\" target=\"_blank\">mysterious accident at a naval weapons testing range<\/a> on the White Sea in northwestern Russia earlier this month has been accompanied by changing or contradictory information from Russian authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That has led to speculation about what really happened in the town of and what type of weapon was involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has even raised comparisons to the Soviet Union&#8217;s 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the world&#8217;s worst nuclear disaster, when Soviet officials tried to cover up the news for days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctbto.org\/\" target=_blank>Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization<\/a> said earlier this week that several Russian radiation monitoring stations went silent shortly after the reported explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lassina Zebro, the organization\u2019s executive secretary, said Tuesday on Twitter that the two Russian stations that were reported to be offline are back in operation and they are now backfilling the data. He also lauded Moscow for \u201cexcellent cooperation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian officials earlier Tuesday brushed off suggestions that they were concealing details of the explosion from foreign nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told the Interfax news agency Tuesday that it is Russia\u2019s choice, not an obligation, to share data under the treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He did not directly address the reports that information on radiation levels was not shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">To requests on <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/IMS?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IMS<\/a> detection beyond <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/CTBT?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CTBT<\/a>, data in, or near the path of potential plume from the explosion are being analyzed .
