About 100 crewman on the vessel died.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/09\/15\/remains-of-north-dakota-sailor-killed-in-pearl-harbor-attack-identified\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/191217-A-ZQ077-001.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Remains of North Dakota sailor killed in Pearl Harbor attack identified<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The remains of a Navy sailor who was killed during the 1941 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor have been identified and will be returned to his home state of North Dakota.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson was buried at Greenwood Memory Lawn cemetery in Phoenix with a 21-gun salute and the folding and presentation of the U.S. flag to the family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was always my grandparent\u2019s hopes, and their siblings \u2026 that Carl would be eventually found and returned to them \u2014 today that prayer has been answered,\u201d Johnson\u2019s nephew Carl Dahl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least four generations of his relatives gathered for the funeral. The Patriot Guard Riders, Navy and Air Force personnel, and a Pearl Harbor survivor were also at Johnson\u2019s burial. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo see finally after nearly 80 years that we were able to identify the remains and he was able to come home and be buried next to his parents, next to my grandparents, his sister, it\u2019s an amazing thing.
