{"id":42165,"date":"2018-05-10T21:14:12","date_gmt":"2018-05-10T21:14:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/10\/how-four-sailors-saved-two-swimmers-at-naval-station-mayport\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:44:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:44:20","slug":"how-four-sailors-saved-two-swimmers-at-naval-station-mayport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/05\/10\/how-four-sailors-saved-two-swimmers-at-naval-station-mayport\/","title":{"rendered":"How four sailors saved two swimmers at Naval Station Mayport"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A normal day at the Naval Station Mayport beach in Florida turned out anything but for two swimmers, thanks to four visiting sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The swimmers, two teenage girls, ran into trouble about 75 yards off the shore on May 5 at about the same time the sailors \u2015 Chief Petty Officer Aniahau Desha, Hospitalman Gaston Yescas, Petty Officer 1st Class Sheldon Lucius, and Petty Officer 3rd Class Joshua Essick <span class=\"js-paste-start-FKVREFNCGBHBJB27JMSI3ROIH4\"> \u2015 <span class=\"js-paste-end-FKVREFNCGBHBJB27JMSI3ROIH4\"> were settling on the beach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was on the beach with my wife, and everyone showed up there, Josh, Sheldon, and Gaston. We\u2019d just sat down, and some ladies came up the beach were yelling for help, seeing that the girls were out in the waves, needing help. They were in trouble, so we just ran into the water and got them,\u201d Desha told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/276419\/navy-volleyball-players-save-two-lives\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Armed Forces Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sailors, members of the All-Navy Men\u2019s Vollyball team, pulled both girls out of the water, performing CPR on one until emergency personnel arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen we got on shore, as soon as I picked her up, I noticed that she wasn\u2019t breathing. It was obvious that she wasn\u2019t breathing. I checked for her pulse \u2015 there was no pulse. So we immediately started chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth,\u201d said Desha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The girl has since been released from the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt makes me feel great to hear that she made it out alive,\u201d Yescas said. \u201cHer mom sent us a message on Facebook to let us know that she was getting discharged, and that her daughter was going to write us a letter and send us a picture just saying thank you for what we did.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A normal day at
