{"id":42186,"date":"2019-11-02T16:50:18","date_gmt":"2019-11-02T16:50:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/11\/02\/another-arctic-mission-completed-the-coast-guards-icebreaker-takes-a-bow\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:46:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:46:04","slug":"another-arctic-mission-completed-the-coast-guards-icebreaker-takes-a-bow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/11\/02\/another-arctic-mission-completed-the-coast-guards-icebreaker-takes-a-bow\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Arctic mission completed, the Coast Guard\u2019s icebreaker takes a bow"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">JUNEAU, Alaska \u2014 The cutter Healy visited Juneau, mooring downtown Oct. 27 on its way home to its homeport in Seattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard\u2019s only medium icebreaker, Healy has been conducting scientific research in the Arctic with scholars from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whoi.edu\/\" target=_blank> Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute<\/a> and the University of Washington, said Ensign Trevor Layman, the Healy\u2019s public affairs officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We&#8217;re a completely unique United States Coast Guard vessel,&#8221; Layman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Healy is the only one of its class, a modern medium icebreaker built from the hull out to support science missions in the Arctic Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard\u2019s other icebreaker, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/28\/coast-guards-last-heavy-icebreaker-caught-on-fire-during-south-pole-mission\/\" target=\"_blank\">Polar Star<\/a>, is a heavy icebreaker, and mostly supports keeping shipping channels open in the Antarctic, Layman said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Coast Guard<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/23\/coast-guard-finally-gets-polar-icebreaker\/\" target=_blank> is looking to enhance its ability<\/a> to operate in the Arctic and Antarctic sea ice with the construction of three medium and three heavy icebreakers called Polar Security Cutters in a recently awarded contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. military currently has no other seagoing icebreakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;If we lose the Polar Star, we lose the power to break ice in the Antarctic,&#8221; Layman said. &#8220;America&#8217;s icebreaking capability is pretty tenuous right now, so we&#8217;ll see how things change.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/02\/28\/coast-guards-last-heavy-icebreaker-caught-on-fire-during-south-pole-mission\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"142\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Flames.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Coast Guard\u2019s last heavy icebreaker caught on fire during South Pole mission<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The cause of the blaze is under investigation.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessel can generate more than 35,000 horsepower with four generators driving two motors, said Machinery Technician 1st Class Camille Sutton, a member of Healy\u2019s engineering department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The engineering department consists of 24 Coast Guardsmen who keep the massive engines running smoothly, Sutton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Layman says the ship\u2019s unique hull form, called the \u201cice knife,\u201d and horsepower are keys to operating in the sea ice of the Arctic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regular ships aren\u2019t built and reinforced specifically to smash the ice like Healy is, Layman said, which limits their usefulness above the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cutter also is equipped with a unique bridge in the aft of the ship, to support backing up and ramming thicker ridges of ice, Layman added.
