{"id":42260,"date":"2014-09-18T13:17:00","date_gmt":"2014-09-18T13:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2014\/09\/18\/mabus-thanks-electric-boat-for-sub-cost-cuts\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:46:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:46:24","slug":"mabus-thanks-electric-boat-for-sub-cost-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2014\/09\/18\/mabus-thanks-electric-boat-for-sub-cost-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Mabus thanks Electric Boat for sub cost cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"character dateline\">GROTON, Conn. \u2013 <\/span> Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus has thanked Electric Boat and its workers for helping drive down the cost of building big-ticket submarines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theday.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/20140917\/NWS09\/140919681\/1047\/rss01\">The Day of New London reports<\/a> that Mabus ended a tour of the Virginia-class submarine Illinois on Wednesday by thanking EB executives and workers for helping drive down the cost of submarine construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He says it allowed the Navy to sign a $17.6 billion contract this year to build 10 Virginia-class submarines in the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mabus says the result is 10 submarines for the price of nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the five years before he became Navy secretary in 2009, Mabus said 27 ships were commissioned. He said 70 ships were put under contract since he took over and he doesn&#8217;t the see the number falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\"
