Truman entered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Norwegian-Sea\" target=_blank>Norwegian Sea <\/a>on Friday, the first flattop to do so since September 1991, according to a U.S. 6th Fleet press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The carrier and select escorts from its strike group are preparing to participate in a massive NATO exercise straddling late October and early November, but they arrived Friday in fast-thawing northern waters in the wake of warnings from the Navy\u2019s top officer about rising Russian activities there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman\u2019s path on Friday was across what strategists call the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usni.org\/usni-blog\/22520\" target=_blank>\u201cGIUK Gap,\u201d<\/a> waters around Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom considered vital if American warship must rush to Europe to aid allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also a key route for Russian submarines slipping into the North Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Aug. 24, the Navy re-established the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/08\/25\/back-to-the-future-with-2nd-fleet\/\" target=_blank>2nd Fleet<\/a>, a stalwart force during the Cold War, to patrol the Atlantic Ocean, including northern climes.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/04\/09\/as-arctic-waters-open-nations-plant-their-flags\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/8_SD_Arctic.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">As Arctic waters open,  nations plant their flags<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Arctic panel at the Navy League\u2019s Sea-Air-Space exposition comes at a time when the sea ice on top of the world continues to retreat, presenting billions of dollars in new economic potential that is surfacing alongside new environmental and security challenges.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman\u2019s northern voyage echoes Cold War patrols, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lexingtoninstitute.org\/dr-daniel-goure\/\" target=_blank>Dr. Daniel Goure<\/a>, a former defense official and senior vice president of the Lexington Institute think tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sending the Truman and her escorts there is more than a show of force, Goure said. It\u2019s about reacquainting a new generation of officers and sailors with what could become a maritime battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019d wager that the carrier strike group command has never participated in this kind of exercise in that area, and if he has it hasn\u2019t been since he was an ensign,\u201d Goure said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Goure predicted these deployments likely will become the norm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about training for this kind of warfare but specifically training the location that we may have to fight,\u201d he said. \u201cSo you are going to see more large-scale training in the Mediterranean, training in the Arctic and training in the western Pacific.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Andrew L. &quot;Woody&quot; Lewis took the helm of the 2nd Fleet in a Friday ceremony aboard a carrier tied up to a pier at Naval Station Norfolk.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman\u2019s arrival in the Arctic this week marks the first carrier to operate in the area since the now-retired America in September 1991.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite the arduous weather and sea conditions, these men and women are demonstrating this ship can bring a full spectrum of capabilities to bear anywhere in the world,\u201d Capt. Nick Dienna, the Truman\u2019s commanding officer, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=107489&#038;utm_source=phplist691&#038;utm_medium=email&#038;utm_content=HTML&#038;utm_campaign=Navy.mil+Top+Stories\" target=_blank>Navy release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Truman strike group will conduct air, surface and underwater exercises in the rough seas, freezing temperatures and relentless winds before joining 30 NATO allies for the massive <a href=\"https:\/\/jfcnaples.nato.int\/exercises\/trident-juncture-18\/trident-juncture-18-news\" target=_blank>Trident Juncture<\/a> maneuvers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exercise will take place in Norway and off the NATO ally\u2019s shore, plus the Baltic Sea. It\u2019s slated to involve 14,000 American troops alongside 36,000 personnel from friendly nations. More than 50 aircraft, 65 ships and 10,000 vehicles also will take part in the maneuvers, planners say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his news release, Carrier Strike Group 8\u2019s commanding officer \u2014 Rear Adm.
