Ford<\/a>, during its post-shakedown availability that kicked off July 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The money, part of a larger DoD reprogramming request from June, will go toward fixing a number of issues that arose during its recently concluded post-delivery trials, according to a copy of the request obtained by Defense News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the document, the Navy needs to move:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>$12.7 million to fix \u201ccontinuing technical deficiencies\u201d with the Advanced Weapon Elevators.<\/li><li>$30 million for \u201ctooling and repair\u201d of the main thrust bearings, issues that the Navy has blamed on the manufacturer.<\/li><li>$20 million for additional repairs, a prolonged post-shakedown availabilty, and parts and labor.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2018\/06\/25\/advanced-arresting-gear-is-coming-along\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nvy.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Advanced arresting gear is coming along<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The carrier Ford&#039;s new arresting gear, replacing the old-school arresting cables, trapped two new aircraft last month.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2018-05-08\/carrier-suffers-new-failure-at-sea-as-u-s-navy-seeks-more-funds\" target=_blank>told Congress in <\/a>May that it was going to exceed the Ford\u2019s $12.9 billion cost cap because of needed repairs and alterations. The $62.7 million was part of that total repair bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The repairs and technology setbacks extended the Ford\u2019s PSA at Huntington Ingalls&#8217; Newport News Shipbuilding from eight months to 12 months, according to a statement from Naval Sea Systems Command, and significantly added to the cost. The ship will then<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2017\/06\/20\/us-navy-might-get-to-skip-ford-shock-trials-ahead-of-first-deployment\/\" target=_blank> proceed to full-ship shock trials <\/a>ahead of its first deployment, a priority pushed by Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Sen.
