{"id":42496,"date":"2018-05-21T16:54:13","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T16:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/21\/petty-officer-advancements-trending-down-this-spring\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:46:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:46:03","slug":"petty-officer-advancements-trending-down-this-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/05\/21\/petty-officer-advancements-trending-down-this-spring\/","title":{"rendered":"Petty officer advancements are trending down this spring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy personnel officials will advance nearly 22,000 active, drilling reserve and reserve full-time support sailors this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bad news is that this cycle, the chance for individual sailors to move up has gone down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the total force, 96,684 sailors sat for their exams in February and March, with 88,124 passing. Those sailors are competing for one of the 21,745 quotas being offered between the three paygrades, which amounts to a nearly-24 percent shot to advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2017\/11\/20\/navy-advancement-quotas-show-improving-odds-for-moving-up\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/170921-N-GK939-041.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy advancement quotas show improving odds for moving up<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Quotas released by the Navy Monday show sailors competing for advancement to E-4, E-5 and E-6 have, overall, a 27 percent shot at moving up this cycle.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year\u2019s chance is three percentage points lower than last fall, making this cycle the first downward trend in total force advancements since fall 2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy released the spring quotas data on Monday. The names of those advanced are expected to be released to commands on Tuesday and made public Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>ACTIVE DUTY<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the active-duty side, opportunity dropped across the board at all three paygrades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Overall, the active force has a nearly-23 percent chance at moving up, almost five percentage points lower than last fall. It\u2019s the lowest rate of advancement in nearly two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A total of 84,367 active-duty sailors took their tests this spring, with 81,850 passing. These sailors were competing for 18,584 total quotas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out the active-duty sailor advancements below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/advancement-calculator\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Active Duty Cycle Spring 2018 E-4<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/partner-mco-archive.s3.amazonaws.com\/client_files\/1526935416.pdf\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Active Duty Cycle Spring 2018 E-5<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/partner-mco-archive.s3.amazonaws.com\/client_files\/1526912599.pdf\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Active Duty Cycle Spring 2018 E-6<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>RESERVE FULL-TIME SUPPORT<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reserve Full-Time Support sailors saw a rise in their shot to advance this cycle after a slight dip last fall. This means the FTS force has seen increases in four out of the past five advancement cycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With 1,833 sailors taking tests, 1,757 passing sailors were eligible for one of the 503 available quotas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also up in the FTS are test failures, which doubled to 76 from last cycle\u2019s 38.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check out the advancement chances for Reserve Full-Time Support sailors below.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/partner-mco-archive.s3.amazonaws.com\/client_files\/1526912618.pdf\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover835541\">Full Time Support Spring 2018 E-4 through E-6<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>SELECTED RESERVE<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drilling reserve sailors are again seeing a rise in advancement opportunity, with a 33.6 percent chance to advance, up from last cycle\u2019s 30.8 percent. That rise again gives drilling reservists the best overall rate of advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all, 10,310 sat for their exams, with 7,813 cutting a passing score. Those sailors were competing for one of 2,625 total quotas. It\u2019s the selected reserve\u2019s fourth consecutive increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dark lining is that the Selected Reserve also had the highest failure rate in the total force at 24.2 percent.
