{"id":42779,"date":"2018-06-07T03:51:35","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T03:51:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/07\/after-74-year-postponement-101st-airborne-plays-game-that-never-happened\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:25:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:25:15","slug":"after-74-year-postponement-101st-airborne-plays-game-that-never-happened","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/off-duty\/military-sports\/2018\/06\/07\/after-74-year-postponement-101st-airborne-plays-game-that-never-happened\/","title":{"rendered":"After 74-year postponement, 101st Airborne plays \u2018game that never happened\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honoring the soldiers who fought almost 74 years earlier in World War II, 24 members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2017\/09\/11\/thousands-of-us-troops-continue-to-support-hurricane-irma-rescue-and-recovery-operations\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">101st <\/a>Airborne Division gathered in Sainte-Mere-Eglise, France, to play a game of touch football. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A similar game was nearly played in the late fall of 1944.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believing a victory over the Axis forces to be inevitable and approaching, American units stationed in Champagne, France, including the 101st Airborne, made plans to organize and play a big football game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The division held tryouts for the game, dubbed the \u201cChampagne Bowl,\u201d which they planned to take place on Christmas day, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/news\/74-years-on-screaming-eagles-play-game-that-never-happened-1.530829\">Stars and Stripes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pigskin did not see any action that day, however, as 10,000 men of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2017\/05\/10\/today-in-history-may-10\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">101st<\/a> Airborne Division marched north to the Ardennes, to a conflict that would come to be known as the Battle of the Bulge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"879\" height=\"628\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/101st-pic-2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-78252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/101st-pic-2.jpg.jpg 879w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/101st-pic-2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,214 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/101st-pic-2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,549 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 879px) 100vw, 879px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division, WWII veterans, Helen Patton, the granddaughter of the late Gen. An epic multinational amphibious and airborne operation, D-Day forged partnerships and reinforced transatlantic bonds that remain strong today. Overall, U.S. service members from 20 units in Europe and the U.S. will participate in events and ceremonies May 30-June 7, 2018, in almost 40 locations throughout the Normandy region of France as part of Joint Task Force Normandy 74.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans for the \u201cChampagne Bowl\u201d were forgotten until Helen Patton, granddaughter of the late Gen. George Patton, learned of the game in 2017 while talking to a historian at the 101st Airborne Division Museum in Bastogne, Belgium. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Born out of a desire to honor her grandfather and the men that fought alongside him, Patton organized a new game, which she dubbed the \u201cRemembrance Bowl.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, on June 2, after 74 long years, the game finally took place, with present day members of the 101st Airborne participating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldiers were already in Normandy to participate in D-Day anniversary events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho knows how many of those guys even made it home &#8230; let alone to Christmas,\u201d Patton said in an interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/206369\/101st_plays_game_that_never_happened_commemorates_greatest_generation\" title=\"\">Army<\/a>. \u201cSo I felt that we should play the game that never happened for them. It\u2019s a new way to commemorate. It\u2019s a way to turn the page of history.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patton plans to continue this new event annually, and is in the process of working with local mayors in
