{"id":44619,"date":"2019-08-26T22:57:46","date_gmt":"2019-08-26T22:57:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/08\/26\/russia-reveals-radiation-details\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:55:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:55:29","slug":"russia-reveals-radiation-details","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/26\/russia-reveals-radiation-details\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia reveals radiation details"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MOSCOW \u2014 Russia\u2019s state weather and environment monitoring agency on Monday released new details about a brief spike in radioactivity following a mysterious explosion at the navy\u2019s testing range that has been surrounded by secrecy and fueled fears of increased radiation levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/23\/russian-doctor-has-trace-of-radiation-after-explosion\/\" target=_blank> Aug. 8 incident <\/a>at the Russian navy\u2019s range in Nyonoksa on the White Sea killed two servicemen and five nuclear engineers and injured six others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authorities reported a rise in radiation levels in nearby Severodvinsk, but insisted it didn\u2019t pose any danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russia\u2019s<a href=\"http:\/\/government.ru\/en\/department\/49\/\" target=_blank> state weather and environmental monitoring agency<\/a> \u2014 the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meteorf.ru\/\" target=_blank>Rosgidromet<\/a>) \u2014 said Monday the brief rise in radiation levels was caused by a cloud of radioactive gases containing isotopes of barium, strontium and lanthanum that drifted across the area. The agency said its monitoring has found no trace of radiation in air or ground samples since Aug. 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has previously said that the peak radiation reading in Severodvinsk on Aug. 8 briefly reached 1.78 microsieverts per hour in just one neighborhood \u2014 about 16 times the average. Readings in other parts of Severodvinsk varied between 0.45 and 1.33 microsieverts for a couple of hours before returning to normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The authorities said those readings didn&#8217;t pose any danger, and the recorded levels were several times less than what a passenger is exposed to on a long-haul flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/08\/20\/after-russian-navy-nuke-site-explosion-moscow-resumes-radiation-info-sharing\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nuke-accident-mAIN.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">After Russian navy nuke site explosion, Moscow resumes radiation info sharing<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The mysterious accident near the White Sea earlier this month has been accompanied by changing or contradictory information from Russian authorities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alexei Karpov, Russia\u2019s envoy to international organizations in Vienna, told the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organization on Monday that \u201cthe tragic accident that occurred has nothing to do with nuclear tests.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, he said, the tests at the range &#8220;were related to the development of weapons, which we had to start creating as one of the retaliatory measures in connection with the U.S. unilateral withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002,&#8221; according to a Russian foreign ministry transcript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contradictory statements from the authorities and their reluctance to reveal details of the explosion have drawn comparisons to the Soviet cover-up of the 1986 explosion and fire at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the world&#8217;s worst nuclear disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Ministry denied any radiation leak even as the local administration in Severodvinsk reported a hike in radiation levels and told residents to stay indoors \u2014 a move that prompted frightened residents to buy iodine, which can help reduce risks from exposure to radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Russian media reported that the victims of the explosion received high doses of radiation. the authorities in a social network post for failing to warn the hospital workers about the deadly risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey were abandoned and left to fend for themselves,\u201d the newspaper quoted Semin as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Asked about the doctor&#8217;s statement, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the authorities will look into the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials have said the explosion in Nyonoksa occurred during tests of a &#8220;nuclear isotope power source&#8221; of a rocket engine \u2014 a cryptic description that made many observers conclude that the test involved one of Russia&#8217;s most secretive weapons \u2014 the prospective Burevestnik (Storm Petrel) nuclear-powered cruise missile which was code-named &#8220;Skyfall&#8221; by NATO.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. President Donald Trump has thrown his weight behind that theory,
