{"id":44673,"date":"2019-01-11T22:44:01","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T22:44:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/11\/this-guy-wrote-a-short-story-about-carrier-sailors-tripping-on-acid-and-its-glorious\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:07:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:07:51","slug":"this-guy-wrote-a-short-story-about-carrier-sailors-tripping-on-acid-and-its-glorious","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/11\/this-guy-wrote-a-short-story-about-carrier-sailors-tripping-on-acid-and-its-glorious\/","title":{"rendered":"This guy wrote a short story about carrier sailors tripping on acid and it\u2019s glorious"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News of more than a dozen sailors from the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan\u2019s nuclear department being disciplined or charged for their participation in an alleged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/06\/officials-ronald-reagan-lsd-probe-bigger-than-you-think-14-nuke-sailors-snagged\/\" target=_blank>LSD ring<\/a> sent shock waves across the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what if a carrier\u2019s executive officer spiked his CO\u2019s morning coffee with the hallucinogenic drug?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it was all part of a conspiracy involving an underground military sect dedicated to wielding acid to end all war?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of a handful of shipmates in the reactor department, maybe an entire carrier crew tripped balls after the drug was blown through an underway ship\u2019s ventilation system?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the glorious imaginings of author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookworks.com\/members\/johnfraim\/\" target=_blank>John Fraim<\/a>, who read Navy Times\u2019 true-life coverage of the Gipper\u2019s drug ring and wrote a short piece of fiction about sailors dropping acid on a flattop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entitled \u201cConfrontation,\u201d the Ohio-based author first pumped out a short story but then extended his vision to a novel-length treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/partner-mco-archive.s3.amazonaws.com\/client_files\/1547220967.pdf\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Read &quot;Confrontation,&quot; the story of an aircraft carrier full of sailors who trip out on LSD<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought it was a fascinating story,\u201d Fraim said of Navy Times\u2019 initial coverage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the counter-narcotics probe continues, Big Navy has released few details on what went down in Yokosuka last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the 70-year-old retired marketing man began filling in the blanks, kind of like flattop fan fiction, with a port call in Woodstock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what a long strange trip it became: a looming war against the Chinese and the stress from a high tempo of operations in the 7th Fleet get swirled in a generous dollop of mind-altering lysergic acid diethylamide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat if LSD was on a carrier heading toward some sort of international confrontation?\u201d he said. \u201cThat got my head spinning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraim is a published author who co-wrote \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.abebooks.com\/9781542932998\/Londonderry-Farewell-Untold-Story-Captain-1542932998\/plp\" target=_blank>Londonderry Farewell: An Untold Story<\/a>\u201d with retired Navy Capt. Tom McKeown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cConfrontation\u201d is also nautically-themed but it\u2019s a stark departure from his earlier work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, it takes place on the fictional flattop Lyndon Stuart Dodge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, \u201cLSD\u201d is stenciled across the tower and the Navy isn\u2019t talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/fact_display.asp?cid=4200&#038;tid=1000&#038;ct=4\" target=_blank>a dock landing ship<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This LSD is leading a mighty armada to fight China, even as the suits back in Washington, D.C. talk peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat the hell did the Chinese think we\u2019d do when they blocked South Korean trade with us?\u201d Capt. Ten members of his crew had been busted with LSD the night before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NCIS and \u201cthe FBI\u2019s special psychedelic unit\u201d are rushed to the carrier to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harrison wants to get to the bottom of it: \u201cWe\u2019re just a few days from being face-to-face with the Chinese in the East China Sea. All I need is a crew filled with drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, in a moment of triad leadership dysfunction that would make any command climate survey administrator blush, Harrison\u2019s executive officer, Capt. William Benjamin, spikes his skipper\u2019s coffee with LSD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Harrison\u2019s any proof, Navy officers can turn on, tune in and drop out because the CO\u2019s gone, man. Gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour first acid trip Captain,\u201d the wily Benjamin says. \u201cIt\u2019ll do you good, show you there\u2019s another world out there, a world without killing and war. A world of peace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once they were ring-knocking U.S. Naval Academy buddies, but thanks to the yellow rays of California sunshine breaking through the purple haze, the XO\u2019s plot for peace is working:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA takeover of the greatest weapons in the world via soft powers of particular drugs rather than the hardened reality of nuclear war. For XO Benjamin and many others, it seemed the only way out of the mess the modern world had gotten itself into. The path towards peace and harmony rather than war and killing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/11\/02\/prosecutors-sailors-ran-an-lsd-ring-off-the-ronald-reagan-two-charged\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"206\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ron-reagan.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Prosecutors: Sailors ran an LSD ring off the Ronald Reagan, two charged<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Two nuclear department sailors will be court-martialed for possessing and distributing the hallucinogen, and the Navy is mulling the fate of three others.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the XO\u2019s plot faces a big problem: the feds brought to the ship to crack down on sailors strolling through strawberry fields forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a nod to the brutal OPTEMPO of the Japan-based 7th Fleet, an FBI agent brought aboard suggests LSD abuse most commonly occurs on \u201cour highest stress warships, our carriers and nuclear submarines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt makes young people \u2014 even top Navy people \u2014 look for ways out of the stress,\u201d the agent notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt least ten of them decided to use LSD to break the stress,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But another agent zeroes in on the XO\u2019s motives and points to a larger guerrilla movement inside the armed forces: \u201cThey are like a secret club of military leaders who have taken psychedelic drugs and believe there has to be a new direction in the military.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those 10 busted sailors? They\u2019re part of a secret society called the \u201cNew Patriots\u201d and they\u2019re dedicated to bringing about a new world by dosing large numbers of people at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe call them Spikers because they spike things in the world with LSD so that it is ingested without knowing it,\u201d an agent warns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they focus on ships because they\u2019re isolated and \u201cthe effects of psychedelics increase at sea, away from culture and the bounds of logic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s why the blotter plotters on board this carrier are a coven of culinary specialists, sailors who planned to dot their shipmates at lunch in the mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/home\/left-column\/2018\/12\/01\/naval-academy-midshipman-pleads-guilty-to-dealing-drugs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18206110727983.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Naval Academy midshipman pleads guilty to dealing drugs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Zachary Williams has been sentenced to 13 months confinement and dismissal from the Navy.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without spoiling all of Fraim\u2019s tale, the dastardly XO is eventually nabbed, but our heroes have to take anti-LSD pills and save the ship after acid blows through the ventilation system and the crew starts to swim laps through some electric Kool-Aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Awakening from his trance, the CO Harrison is tempted to drop another dose left for him by the nefarious XO, but he casts it over the railing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was a struggle for the skipper. And when his tripping crew awakens the next day, he knows they\u2019re going to have to stare down the golden dragon, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will not be an easy thing to confront,\u201d Harrison laments. \u201cMaybe even tougher than the Chinese navy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seriously, <a
