{"id":44745,"date":"2020-03-13T01:01:46","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T01:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/13\/naval-academy-extends-spring-break-amid-coronavirus-concerns\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:52:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:52:44","slug":"naval-academy-extends-spring-break-amid-coronavirus-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/13\/naval-academy-extends-spring-break-amid-coronavirus-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Naval Academy extends spring break amid coronavirus concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/homepage.php\" target=_blank>U.S. Naval Academy<\/a> is delaying the return of midshipmen from spring break through March 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Annapolis-based service academy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/COVID-19\/_files\/documents\/20200312_Email_from_Superintendent_to_USNA.pdf\" target=_blank>announced the extension Thursday<\/a> amid continued concern over the spread of COVID-19, or novel coronavirus, and as <a href=\"https:\/\/governor.maryland.gov\/2020\/03\/12\/governor-hogan-announces-major-actions-to-protect-public-health-limit-spread-of-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=_blank>Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan closed the state\u2019s public school system<\/a> beginning March 16 through March 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Academy now joins a growing list of colleges and universities across the country that are extending spring breaks or shuttering their campuses and moving online for the remainder of the semester. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, the Navy Recruit Training Command announced it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/09\/coronavirus-concerns-mean-empty-seats-at-navy-graduations\/\" target=_blank>barring all guests<\/a> from boot camp and officer graduations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are NO plans to shut down the Naval Academy,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/navydata\/bios\/bio.asp?bioID=570\" target=_blank>Superintendent Vice Adm. Sean Buck<\/a> wrote in a letter posted to the institution\u2019s web site. \u201cPlease continue to coordinate with your supervisors regarding your work schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the Patriot League \u2014 which counts the Midshipmen as members for most non-football varsity sports \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/patriotleague.org\/news\/2020\/3\/12\/general-patriot-league-to-cancel-all-spring-practice-and-competition.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> it was cancelling all spring sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/12\/maine-based-navy-reservist-tests-presumptive-positive-for-coronavirus\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Mills-MAIN.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Maine-based Navy reservist tests \u2018presumptive positive\u2019 for coronavirus<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It&#039;s the first Navy case of its kind in the reserve force.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midshipmen began their spring break March 7 and were expected to return Sunday. While they might not have to come back to campus for another 14 days, the Academy is prepping so that midshipmen will commence remote studies on March 20, Buck wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buck referred to the Academy as a \u201clow-risk area\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/COVID-19\/_files\/documents\/20200312_Letter_from_Superintendent_to_Parents.pdf\" target=_blank>in a letter to parents<\/a>, but recognized the rapid spread of COVID-19 and the need to prep for contingencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy strategic goals for addressing COVID-19 are twofold: 1) protect our midshipmen, faculty, staff, and coaches, and slow down COVID-19, as we are planning for the likelihood of it being transmitted here; 2) complete the semester, and graduate and commission the class of 2020,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extension \u201cwill allow for our medical team to receive medical supplies and be better prepared to assess and treat midshipmen upon their return, as well as time for our faculty to prepare to teach the brigade remotely,&#8221; Buck added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are currently discussing mitigation measures throughout USNA which will affect the daily life of midshipmen, to include dining arrangements in King Hall, academic classes, physical fitness, events, etc., as well as planning for the reintegration of the midshipmen,&#8221; Buck said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before midshipmen left for break, the Academy held mandatory training for all personnel \u2014 including faculty, staff and coaches \u2014 about COVID-19, school spokesperson Cmdr. Alana Garas told Navy Times in an email late Thursday. That included information about the spread, symptoms, prevention and treatment of the disease and what to do if someone became sick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDirection was given to follow the guidelines put out by the CDC at that time, to include travel notice warnings,\u201d Garas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link
