{"id":44759,"date":"2019-01-16T20:43:17","date_gmt":"2019-01-16T20:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/01\/16\/three-carriers-two-destroyers-and-a-gator-to-shift-homeports\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T20:52:19","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:52:19","slug":"three-carriers-two-destroyers-and-a-gator-to-shift-homeports","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/01\/16\/three-carriers-two-destroyers-and-a-gator-to-shift-homeports\/","title":{"rendered":"Three carriers, two destroyers and a gator to shift homeports"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy will again play musical homeports for three aircraft carriers in 2019, just four years after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2015\/07\/12\/crews-to-start-unprecedented-3-carrier-swap-this-summer\/\" target=_blank>the last shift<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year will also see two guided-missile destroyers moving to San Diego and an amphibious assault ship returning to Norfolk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Navy officials announced the flattop transfers on Aug. 2, they didn\u2019t put dates to the moves. But Navy Personnel Command\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/bupers-npc\/enlisted\/detailing\/seaspecial\/Pages\/Decom---Homeport-Change.aspx\" target=_blank>Homeport and Decommissioning<\/a> page is now filling in the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft carrier Carl Vinson\u2019s shift from San Diego to Bremerton, Washington, will occur Jan. 17. The Vinson is expected to enter a maintenance period at Bremerton Naval Shipyard. After the overhaul, the flattop will stay in Washington, replacing the carrier John C. Stennis.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2018\/08\/03\/navy-swapping-home-ports-for-three-aircraft-carriers\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/VINSON.jpg_c06363.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy swapping home ports for three aircraft carriers<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move will affect the John C. Stennis, Abraham Lincoln and Carl Vinson carriers.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fifth in the Nimitz class of supercarriers, the Stennis is slated to undergo a midlife overhaul so that it can reach a quarter-century of expected operating service. The effective date of the Stennis&#8217; transfer to Norfolk is listed as May 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sister carrier Abraham Lincoln is expected to travel across the globe on a tour that likely will begin in April and end around Halloween at Naval Air Station North Island, which will become the flattop\u2019s new homeport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The moves aren\u2019t a first for the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, the aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan moved to Japan to relieve the George Washington, which sailed to Virginia to begin a midlife overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The carrier Theodore Roosevelt also traveled on a global tour from Norfolk to its present homeport on North Island, arriving in late 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1195\" height=\"627\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wasp.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wasp.jpg.jpg 1195w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wasp.jpg.jpg?resize=300,157 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wasp.jpg.jpg?resize=768,403 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/wasp.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,537 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1195px) 100vw, 1195px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) performs maneuvers Sept. 27, 2018, as sailors and Marines assigned to the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit fire weapons at a target during a Defense of the Amphibious Task Force drill in the South China Sea. (MC1 Daniel Barker\/Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The upcoming moves also involve two destroyers and the amphibious warship Wasp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wasp is expected to return to Norfolk around Sept. 20 after a short stint in Japan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Forward-deployed to Japan, the guided-missile destroyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/ddg63\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Stethem<\/a> will sail to San Diego, with an effective move date of May 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, another Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, the Shoup, will shift from Everett, Washington, to San Diego, but its effective move date should be soon.
