{"id":44974,"date":"2023-02-08T22:47:14","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T22:47:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/08\/navy-salvages-security-patrol-boat-that-sank-in-washington\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:56:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:56:46","slug":"navy-salvages-security-patrol-boat-that-sank-in-washington","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/02\/08\/navy-salvages-security-patrol-boat-that-sank-in-washington\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy salvages security patrol boat that sank in Washington"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy salvaged a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/01\/21\/harbor-security-boat-strikes-barrier-and-sinks-injuring-three-sailors\/#:~:text=A%20Navy%20%E2%80%9Charbor%20security%20boat,press%20release%20late%20Friday%20afternoon.\" target=\"_blank\">security patrol boat that hit a security barrier<\/a> and sank within the perimeter of Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor, Washington last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific, along with personnel from Mobile Dive Salvage Unit 1, the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, and several NBK tenant commands, coordinated to raise the ship from roughly 160 feet underwater at Hood Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The salvage team then sent the vessel, which was assigned to the Navy\u2019s Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific, to an on-base maintenance facility via a Navy barge.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/01\/21\/harbor-security-boat-strikes-barrier-and-sinks-injuring-three-sailors\/#:~:text=A%20Navy%20%E2%80%9Charbor%20security%20boat,press%20release%20late%20Friday%20afternoon.\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Harbor security boat strikes barrier and sinks, injuring three sailors<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy teamed up with the U.S. Coast Guard regarding environmental issues and concerns. The service said it \u201cdoes not appear\u201d that significant oil or hazardous substances were released into the environment, although a few glossy patches of water were spotted periodically where the vessel rested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, an inspection of the vessel upon recovery showed most of the oil and other hazardous substances remained aboard the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur environmental team takes seriously the importance of protecting the environment and wildlife while supporting the many missions performed from NBK,\u201d Capt. Rich Massie, Naval Base Kitsap Commanding Officer, said in a Navy news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident, which occurred on Jan. 19, left three sailors hospitalized to treat \u201cnon-life threatening injuries,\u201d the Navy said.
