{"id":45064,"date":"2023-03-30T23:02:08","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T23:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/30\/navy-seal-silver-star-recipient-mike-day-dies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:57:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:57:08","slug":"navy-seal-silver-star-recipient-mike-day-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/03\/30\/navy-seal-silver-star-recipient-mike-day-dies\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy SEAL, Silver Star recipient Mike Day dies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Navy SEAL and Silver Star recipient <a href=\"https:\/\/valor.militarytimes.com\/hero\/3849\" target=\"_blank\">Douglas \u201cMike\u201d Day<\/a>, who suffered 27 gunshots while deployed to Iraq in 2007, has died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe mourn the loss of an outstanding Naval Special Warfare teammate, former Senior Chief Mike Day,\u201d a Naval Special Warfare Command spokeswoman said in an email to Navy Times. \u201cHis courage and grit formed the standard we uphold in the community today, and we will always remember his service to the special operations community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New of his death was first <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/news\/mike-day-navy-seal-iraq\/\" target=\"_blank\">reported by Task &amp; Purpose<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day, who was serving as assault force commander for Naval Special Warfare Task Unit-Fallujah in April 2007, and his team were tasked with capturing a high-ranking member of al-Qaida during a combined helicopter-borne direct action mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to his Silver Star citation, Day was the first of his team to enter the room where enemy insurgents were located and engaged in heavy automatic weapons fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite multiple gunshot wounds, he continued to engage the enemy, transitioning to his pistol after the loss of his primary weapon, eliminating three enemy personnel without injury to the women and children in close proximity to the enemy personnel,\u201d the Silver Star citation says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAdditionally, his decisive leadership and mental clarity in the face of his injuries ensured the success of the mission which resulted in the destruction of four enemy personnel and the recovery of sensitive United States military equipment and valuable intelligence concerning enemy activity in the area,\u201d the citation says.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/01\/20\/navy-awards-silver-star-to-navy-seal-for-heroism-in-vietnam\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ThomasRichards.jpeg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy awards Silver Star to Navy SEAL for heroism in Vietnam<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Retired Rear Adm. Thomas Richards, who as a lieutenant was nicknamed &quot;The Hulk,&quot; carried three platoon mates through enemy fire to safety.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day\u2019s sustained 16 shots to his body, including his abdomen, arms and legs, while his body armor took another 11 shots. He also was also struck with grenade shrapnel. His initial recovery lasted two years, although he shared in his 2020 memoir \u201cPerfectly Wounded\u201d that he still struggled with pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI didn\u2019t even know how bad I was hurting until they came in, and I saw the looks on their faces,\u201d Day told <a href=\"https:\/\/coffeeordie.com\/mike-day-seal\/\" target=\"_blank\">Coffee or Die Magazine in 2020<\/a> about his teammates finding him after the attack. \u201cWe all know that look.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/01\/20\/navy-awards-silver-star-to-navy-seal-for-heroism-in-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Star<\/a> for \u201cfor conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action,\u201d Day\u2019s military awards include two Bronze Stars \u2014 including one with combat valor \u2014 and a Purple Heart, according to Day\u2019s releasable materials obtained by Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Silver Star is the third-highest combat decoration for valor awarded to service members in the Navy and Marine Corps, just under the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day\u2019s memoir also detailed his journey with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury due to his military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver my life, I\u2019ve had a lot of trauma, and I have acquired the mindset that I don\u2019t care what happens,\u201d he told Coffee or Die. \u201cWhen it happens, I\u2019ll just figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day enlisted in the Navy in 1989 and retired in 2010.
