Yang, then a student at the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit Oceana in Virginia Beach, noticed a boy struggling to swim in a rip current roughly 20 yards off shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was very high tides. [The] strong current pulled the kid into deeper water,\u201d Yang, 21, said in a Navy release. \u201c[The] kid began struggling and I noticed from the stand and radioed \u2018Charlie Down\u2019 and sprinted and swam out to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/2022\/07\/12\/this-navy-rescue-swimmer-saved-lives-after-a-boat-capsized-in-san-diego\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">This Navy rescue swimmer saved lives after a boat capsized in San Diego<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">On May 2, 2021, Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 1st Class Cale Foy lived up to the Navy rescue swimmer creed: &quot;so that others may live.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy, 9, originally cried for help while swallowing water, but Yang said the child was unresponsive when he reached the boy, adding that he suspected the child passed out from exhaustion but was alert again once they reached shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I got to him, I jammed the [lifeguard rescue] can into his chest and shouted at him to hold the can but he wasn\u2019t responding or grabbing it, so I grabbed his body with my left arm and kept him tight on the can with my right arm while executing a combat sidestroke kicking toward shore,\u201d Yang said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yang brought the child to the shore and continued to monitor his condition before EMTs got to the scene and took the boy to a hospital. The Navy said the boy\u2019s condition then stabilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yang, who is now assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 32 in Virginia Beach, earned a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his actions saving the child, according to the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yang is originally from Savannah, Georgia, and joined the Navy in 2019.
