Ford, the first of a new class of supercarriers that is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/03\/26\/why-the-carrier-ford-is-delayed-again\/\" target=_blank>behind schedule<\/a>, over budget, and still struggling with development issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work on the ship\u2019s propulsion plant was completed toward the end of July, t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=110532\" target=_blank>he Navy announced<\/a> in a statement Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problems with the carrier\u2019s propulsion system first popped up in January of last year during sea trials. A \u201cmanufacturing defect\u201d was identified as the problem. Troubles were again noted in May just three days after the ship set sail for testing and evaluation, forcing it to return to its home port early.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/07\/01\/the-navys-new-plan-to-fix-fords-elevator-failures\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/190116-N-ON468-1005.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Navy\u2019s new plan to fix Ford\u2019s elevator failures<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">With only two of Ford\u2019s 11 elevators operating \u2014 and no firm schedule for delivering the remaining nine \u2014 the Navy brought a  \u201cteam of experts\u201d from both the government and private industry on board the Ford to fix the snafus, according to a top Pentagon official.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, James Geurts, the Navy\u2019s acquisition boss, told US lawmakers that scheduled maintenance on the Ford would require another three months beyond what was initially planned to deal with problems with its nuclear power plant, weapons elevators, and other unspecified areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy said that the \u201cFord\u2019s propulsion issues weren\u2019t with the nuclear reactors themselves, rather the issues resided in the mechanical components associated in turning steam created by the nuclear plant into spinning screws that propel the ship through the water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the completion of the work on the Ford\u2019s power plant moves the ship closer to returning to sea, the carrier is still having problems with a critical piece of new technology \u2014 the advanced weapons elevators. The elevators are necessary for the movement of munitions to the flight deck, increased aircraft sortie rates, and greater lethality, but only a handful of the elevators are expected to work by the time the ship is returned to the fleet this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2019\/08\/06\/with-mounting-questions-about-cost-and-survivability-a-shifting-political-landscape-for-us-aircraft-carriers\/\" target=\"_blank\">expressed frustration with the Navy\u2019s handling<\/a> of the Ford-class carrier program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe ship was accepted by the Navy incomplete, nearly two years late, two and a half billion dollars over budget, and nine of eleven weapons still don\u2019t work with costs continuing to grow,\u201d Sen. Kennedy, the next Ford-class carrier, and is prepping to purchase two similar flattops in Fiscal Year 2020.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has been struggling to incorporate new technologies into the ship, but the service insists that it is making progress with the catapults and arresting gear used to launch and recover aircraft, systems which initially had problems.
