{"id":45193,"date":"2022-10-19T16:51:33","date_gmt":"2022-10-19T16:51:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/10\/19\/navy-picks-location-for-new-national-museum\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:57:01","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:57:01","slug":"navy-picks-location-for-new-national-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/10\/19\/navy-picks-location-for-new-national-museum\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy picks location for new national museum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has selected a location for its new national museum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/3192758\/secretary-of-the-navy-announces-preferred-location-for-new-national-museum-of-t\/\" target=\"_blank\">Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro<\/a> said during a recent ceremony celebrating the service\u2019s 247th birthday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new structure will be positioned just outside the gated Washington Navy Yard in D.C. \u2014 where the existing museum can be found \u2014 a move designed to allow greater access to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe exhibits of this new museum will create a living memorial to the U.S. Navy\u2019s heritage of victory and valor, bringing to life the human experiences of serving at sea,\u201d Del Toro said at the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although replacing the existing museum has been a drawn-out endeavor, the Navy is finally a step closer to constructing an institution it says will better showcase its history and culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At an anticipated 240,000 square feet, the new \u2014 and free to enter \u2014 museum will be over twice the size of the existing space. It is expected to attract roughly 1.5 million visitors per year \u2014 its current annual crowd averages roughly 100,000 \u2014 putting it on par with the number of guests the area\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.edu\/newsdesk\/about\/stats\" target=\"_blank\">Smithsonian museums<\/a> welcome each year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement is a welcome one, especially given widely shared opinions that the current museum \u201cis not meeting the mission of telling the Navy\u2019s story to the American public,\u201d according to retired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/about-us\/leadership\/director.html\" target=\"_blank\">Adm. In return, the Navy will give the land owner roughly six acres of land within the southeast Navy Yard the service says is too costly to maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy\u2019s new national museum was first announced in Oct. 2020 by Del Toro\u2019s predecessor, with plans for it to open in 2025 \u2014 the year of the sea service\u2019s 250th birthday. For now, a site groundbreaking is not expected to occur until that year, Cox said, adding that the phased project is now likely to cost upwards of $475 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thus far, no money has been raised, but the service is partnering with the Navy Museum Development Foundation to assist in fundraising and development.
