{"id":45471,"date":"2022-10-03T22:13:22","date_gmt":"2022-10-03T22:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/10\/03\/nimitz-rejoins-strike-group-after-jet-fuel-leak-in-water-system\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:55:35","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:55:35","slug":"nimitz-rejoins-strike-group-after-jet-fuel-leak-in-water-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/10\/03\/nimitz-rejoins-strike-group-after-jet-fuel-leak-in-water-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Nimitz rejoins strike group after jet fuel leak in water system"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aircraft carrier Nimitz got back underway Sunday after it was sidelined in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/09\/30\/five-nimitz-sailors-report-health-concerns-from-contaminated-water\/\" target=\"_blank\">San Diego in recent weeks due to contaminated water<\/a> found in the ship\u2019s water system, a casualty that Navy officials say may have sickened more than 10 sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jet fuel was first found in the Nimitz\u2019s potable water system Sept. 16 during a pre-deployment cruise in the Pacific Ocean, and the ship detoured to Naval Air Station North Island so it could undergo a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/09\/28\/jet-fuel-is-still-being-found-in-uss-nimitzs-water\/\" target=\"_blank\">targeted flushing<\/a> starting on Sept. 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhile in port in San Diego, the ship\u2019s crew was connected to San Diego water supply while the ship\u2019s potable water system was flushed with approximately one million gallons of fresh water,\u201d 3rd Fleet spokesman Cmdr. Sean Robertson said in a statement. \u201cOrange Coast Analytical, Inc., a laboratory certified by the state of California\u2019s Department of Health, has tested the water within the ship\u2019s potable water system 70 times since Sept. 21.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The carrier departed San Diego to rejoin the rest of its carrier strike group and to complete its Composite Training Unit Exercise ahead of its upcoming deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNimitz got underway after all tests came back [within] limits and the potable water was determined to be safe for the crew,\u201d Robertson said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Thursday, the Navy said five sailors reported illnesses they believe resulted from the jet fuel found in the carrier\u2019s water system. That number rose to 11 as of Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/09\/21\/jet-fuel-leaks-into-uss-nimitzs-drinking-water-system\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Nimitz-underway-water.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Jet fuel leaks into USS Nimitz\u2019s drinking water system<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Fuel was discovered in the water Friday, and officials said the water system was flushed and back online by Monday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince the incident occurred, eleven Sailors reported symptoms that could be attributed to JP-5 ingestion to Nimitz\u2019s medical department,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cThese symptoms include headache, rash, and diarrhea. All eleven Sailors have received treatment and have been cleared for duty. Nimitz leadership continues to encourage Sailors who experience any symptoms to be evaluated by medical professionals on board the ship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Robertson, the source of the jet fuel leak originated in one of the 26 potable water tanks on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe health, safety, and wellbeing of Nimitz Sailors remains our top priority,\u201d Rear Adm. Christopher Sweeney, commander of Carrier Strike Group 11, said in a statement. \u201cI want to thank all base, local, and federal health and environmental agencies who have worked to ensure we met and exceeded all testing, regulations, and purity standards in order to safely return this warship to sea. I also want to acknowledge the Sailors and leaders on board Nimitz who worked tirelessly and took the necessary action to keep the crew safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The carrier concluded its last deployment in February 2021.
