Bush.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to getting the jet back into operations faster, officials hope it can serve as a proof-of-concept that such repairs can be done at sea in a deployed environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bush and its carrier strike group have been deployed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/08\/10\/the-aircraft-carrier-george-hw-bush-deploys-from-norfolk\/\" target=\"_blank\">the waters of U.S. European Command since August 2022. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Super Hornet, assigned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2016\/07\/12\/navy-s-knighthawks-bid-farewell-to-oceana-in-relocation-to-nas-lemoore\/\" target=\"_blank\">Strike Fighter Squadron 136<\/a>, sustained damage to its starboard engine after an in-flight fire on Aug. 31, 2022, according to the Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/08\/10\/the-aircraft-carrier-george-hw-bush-deploys-from-norfolk\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7363287.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The aircraft carrier George HW Bush deploys from Norfolk<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The carrier is expected to replace the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman, which is deployed to the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, heat and fire damage to the \u201c68R door skin, vent screen, formers, S11 skin, starboard engine bay and all accompanying hardware\u201d would require the bird to be craned off the ship and taken to an ashore location for repairs, the Navy said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/3268706\/its-going-to-be-a-crane-off-cvw-7-frcsw-frcse-complete-first-of-its-kind-aircra\/\" target=\"_blank\">a press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after an engineering investigation, officials decided to attempt a repair aboard the carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince this was the first-ever at-sea replacement of a 68R Door and S-11 Skin, considerable time was required to plan and approve the repair,\u201d Lt. Cmdr. Russell Huff, Carrier Air Wing 7\u2032s maintenance officer, said in the release. \u201cOnce the engineers had believed this repair could be accomplished at sea, or at least that a repair could be attempted, things went very smoothly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After consulting with multiple fleet readiness centers and other commands, arrangements were made to fly technical experts, parts and tools to the carrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jet\u2019s repair efforts were completed on Jan. 9 after 33 days of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cresounding success\u201d of this \u201csignificant at-sea repair\u201d can serve as a springboard to greater repair capability at sea, the air wing\u2019s commander, Capt. Thomas Bodine, said in the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur ability to maintain and repair our aircraft while underway is a critical warfighting competency,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Correction: an earlier version of this article misstated the commands helping with the jet repair work.
