So part of the counselor\u2019s job is to provide crew members with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/05\/03\/a-very-good-girl-deploys-on-carrier-ford-sage-the-therapy-dog\/\" target=\"_blank\">a place to offload the stress<\/a> that slowly builds throughout the day, like a pressure release valve. As someone who stands<b> <\/b>outside of a sailor\u2019s<b> <\/b>chain of command, Mauldin, and those like him,<b> <\/b>provided an oasis of sorts for stressed sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/05\/03\/a-very-good-girl-deploys-on-carrier-ford-sage-the-therapy-dog\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7776196.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">A very good girl deploys on carrier Ford: Sage the service dog<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">During the USS Ford&#039;s deployment to U.S. 6th Fleet, the yellow Labrador retriever will comfort sailors and help them cope with operational stress.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Known in the Navy as DRCs for short, such counselors also provide a reminder of the non-operational world that each sailor comes from, and a heartening affirmation that life is not all drab, gray metal, Mauldin and other counselors told Navy Times earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As such, part of that can involve the insertion of air fresheners in a counselor\u2019s office or the adjacent \u201cP-way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s amazing what a non-flammable scent can do\u201d for a wary sailor\u2019s mindset, said Mauldin, who now supervises the resiliency counselor program from San Diego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"815\" height=\"545\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-mauldin-real.png.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-81582\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-mauldin-real.png.png 815w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-mauldin-real.png.png?resize=300,201 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-mauldin-real.png.png?resize=768,514 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 815px) 100vw, 815px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Deployed resiliency counselor Andrew Mauldin bids farewell to the crew of the amphibious assault ship Boxer in 2018. (Photo courtesy Andrew Mauldin)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some crew members just need a few minutes\u2019 break from the relentlessness of ship life, he said, and stepping into a counselor\u2019s brightly decorated office and catching a whiff of the air freshener, receiving a mini break in the process, can do wonders for the deployed mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI used to keep candy in my office all the time,\u201d added Miriam Lau, a licensed<b> <\/b>clinical social worker and resiliency counselor who deployed aboard the aircraft carrier Carl Vinson earlier this year and was featured among the crew on the ship\u2019s deck during a Super Bowl national anthem montage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI had a couple of different people who had really high-stress positions on the ship who would come by,\u201d she recalled. \u201cThey would call (the candy) their motivational gummy bears. They would just pop in, and it would just be a brief check-in\u2026a moment of decompression for them, that little getaway.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative began in 2013, and 10 years after its inception, the Navy\u2019s deployed resiliency counselor program is evolving as its counselors work to provide sailors a place to offload the kind of daily stressors that don\u2019t require a trip to medical or to a higher level of mental health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/07\/14\/why-is-big-navy-mum-on-mental-health-care-shortages-long-wait-times\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/smith-all-hands.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why is Big Navy mum on mental health care shortages, long wait times?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy is struggling to fill mental health care positions in the fleet, and sailors are complaining about long wait times.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And as concerns continue to emerge about the mental health of today\u2019s fleet, the counselors have become more embedded in the fleet, even as the program continues to grapple with a provider shortage that has reverberated across America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practices have changed since the program\u2019s inception, and these days, resiliency counselors deploy with a ship and are there for the crew when the ship gets back home when the long grind of maintenance begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t always that way,\u201d Mauldin said. \u201cIt was kind of understood that the (resiliency counselor) would jump on for the ride and then jump off when they got back to port after deployment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Working to keep the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/05\/12\/chaplains-taking-frontline-role-in-surface-fleet-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">counselors with the ship\u2019s force<\/a> after deployment provides a continuity of care for the crew, the counselors said, and they are sometimes temporarily attached to units who need a bit more attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOver the last several years, we\u2019ve been really trying to move it to where the standard is to keep them embedded with the command through the entire lifecycle of the ships, going into the yard period but at the ship or at the (berthing barge) that\u2019s next door,\u201d Mauldin added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/05\/12\/chaplains-taking-frontline-role-in-surface-fleet-mental-health\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"218\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/chaplain-photo-1.webp_.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Chaplains taking frontline role in surface fleet mental health<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Destroyer chaplains are providing sailors with a confidant outside their chain of command who they can vent to about anything, officials say.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, Mauldin and other program leaders acknowledge that is not always feasible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The resiliency counselor program has 42 billets, two for every carrier and amphib in the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As of mid-July, 18 of those positions remained unfilled, according to officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the West Coast, 12 out or 16 counselor positions are filled, while 10 of 22 are filled on the East Coast, officials said. Overseas, half of the four billets are filled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDeployed Resiliency Counselors are incredibly effective in improving the quality of service for our service members,\u201d Navy Installations Command spokeswoman Destiny Silbert said an email. \u201cThey provide invaluable support and counseling during what can be a challenging time for Sailors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is not alone in its struggles to fill all its open spots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy leaders have spoken of the high demand for mental health professionals across the country, and that shortage of providers continues to impact the Navy\u2019s ability to attract counselors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An investigation last year into conditions aboard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/12\/21\/uss-george-washington-suicides-investigation-reveals-systemic-issues\/\" target=\"_blank\">the carrier George Washington<\/a> following a cluster of crew suicides found that the resiliency counselor for the ship while it was in the yards was located miles away, and few interviewed sailors even knew that such a resource was available to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also the fact that these resiliency counselors deploy with the ship, live with the sailors, and endure the same long hours that they do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not the easiest position to fill,\u201d said Justin Thomas, the counselor program manager for Navy Region Southwest. \u201cThe reality is we are almost asking them to become active duty, but these are civilian counselors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But to hear from Lau, fellow resiliency counselor Teresa Mendoza, and others, the work is particularly gratifying because of the direct impact they can have on an individual\u2019s well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"714\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-miriam-lau.webp_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-81585\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-miriam-lau.webp_.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-miriam-lau.webp_.jpg?resize=300,214 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/drc-miriam-lau.webp_.jpg?resize=768,548 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Miriam Lau, a licensed clinical social worker and deployed resiliency counselor for the Navy, has deployed with several flattops to provide mental health counseling for sailors. (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is, once they\u2019ve figured out how to get around the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou have to have this mentality of wanting to be excited to jump in, being willing to get lost and ask for directions,\u201d said Lau, who has also deployed aboard the amphib Essex. \u201cYou become part of the crew like that. I mean, that\u2019s how (sailors) feel when they first get here too, I\u2019m sure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resiliency counselors are with the crew \u201cwherever they are,\u201d Mendoza noted, rocking a deployed resiliency counselor polo shirt, getting to know the different divisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018I\u2019m going to be available\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counselors like Lau and Mendoza deploy with the crew to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/01\/10\/swo-boss-embarking-chaplains-to-ddgs-is-aiding-sailor-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cnon-medical counseling,\u201d<\/a> and they do not report who visits them to the chain of command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur goal is to help treat human issues, regular life stressors that we all deal with\u2026whether it\u2019s a one-time session because of something acute that\u2019s just happened and they need to vent, or we can see them up to 12 sessions of short-term counseling, working on a specific goal,\u201d Lau said. \u201cTo really, hopefully, keep them from having that mental health diagnosis and needing that higher level of ship\u2019s medical. We\u2019re trying to provide support at more of that preventive level.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendoza said the issues they see sailors for run the gamut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRelationship issues, grief, death and dying, or perhaps they are trying to detach themselves from a toxic relationship,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When a sailor comes to her with suicidal ideations, Mendoza said she asks them if they really want to end their life as part of their safety assessment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut a lot of times, they really just want the pain to go away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lau said she receives a lot of visits from sailors who struggle with the 24\/7 nature of deployed ship life, and the obliteration of any work-home life boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEspecially as we get into workups and start doing underways, for people who have never done that before,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone comes in with imminent suicidal ideation or criteria for a specific mental health diagnosis, Lau said they walk them over to the ship\u2019s medical department for more in-depth evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"4928\" height=\"3280\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-81587\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg 4928w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg?resize=768,511 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,682 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1022 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/7839809.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1363 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 4928px) 100vw, 4928px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sailors simulate extinguishing a fire during damage control training aboard the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt on June 4. (MCSN Adina Phebus\/Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I think most people I did counseling with on deployment\u2026 their cases were closed because they met the goals that we were working on,\u201d she said. \u201cThings got better. It didn\u2019t mean it got easy; it doesn\u2019t mean the stressor went away. But their outlook on it and how they approached the stressors, and how they regulated their emotions, those types of things got better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thomas worked for a nonprofit before joining the Department of Defense, and recalled worrying about whether a patient he saw was going to have a place to sleep that night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a military population is in many ways more easily treatable, given their youth, health and relative stability when it comes to income and housing, Thomas said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese are fairly healthy people that we get to kind of help redirect sometimes, and just listen to sometimes, and get them back on track and back to work, and it\u2019s because of the age,\u201d Thomas said, \u201cThey can change those patterns pretty quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being a civilian helps sailors trust the counselors onboard, and Lau said most of the sailors she sees are the E-4 rank and below, but she also has chiefs and officers drop in as needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSometimes we need someone to talk to who\u2019s not in our chain of command or who\u2019s not part of our support system back home,\u201d Lau said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, she added, Lau helps sailors break the cycle of negative self-talk rotating in their heads, to help them reframe their issues in a more productive way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is a challenge when you don\u2019t ever leave your workplace,\u201d Lau said. \u201cSo just trying to help them work through those things so they don\u2019t feel alone.
