There\u2019s a contest for that."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the Navy\u2019s various customs and traditions, the New Year\u2019s deck log poem stands out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, marking the beginning of the new year, the officer of the deck on a given vessel can write the year\u2019s first log entry in poetic form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why does this happen? We don\u2019t know.
