Cmdr. Ronald Kolpak was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/Press-Releases\/display-pressreleases\/Article\/3472436\/navy-reserve-center-springfield-commanding-officer-relieved\/\" target=\"_blank\">relieved of command<\/a> of Navy Reserve Center Springfield on July 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A brief statement issued after the firing stated that Kolpak was relieved due to a \u201closs of confidence\u201d in his ability to command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Georgia police and court records show that Kolpak was arrested July 14 and charged with two counts of aggravated assault by strangulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Navy official who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on personnel matters confirmed that Kolpak was relieved in connection to the alleged choking.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2023\/08\/01\/navy-fires-commanding-officer-of-oregon-reserve-unit\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/kolpak.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy fires commanding officer of Oregon reserve unit<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Lt. Ronald Kolpak was relieved of command Wednesday due to &quot;loss of confidence&quot; in his ability to command, the Navy said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kolpak did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police were called to the Sleep Inn Hotel in College Park, Georgia, on the evening of July 14, according to College Park police records obtained by Navy Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There, Kolpak\u2019s mother told officers that Kolpak \u201cbecame upset\u201d because his mother \u201cpoured his alcoholic beverage out,\u201d according to the police report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An argument ensued and turned physical when \u201cMr. Kolpak began choking (his mother) on the bed,\u201d the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen (Kolpak\u2019s stepfather) attempted to intervene, Mr. Kolpak then began choking both of them, holding them down on the bed,\u201d according to the police report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His mother told officers \u201cshe was unable to move\u201d and lost consciousness during the alleged incident, the report states, but she eventually escaped and ran downstairs to call police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She declined medical treatment but responding officers reported seeing \u201cvisible red marks around her neck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kolpak told officers \u201che did get upset inside the hotel room and choked his mother,\u201d according to the police report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was arrested, and court records show he was released from jail on bond on July 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials with the Clayton County District Attorney\u2019s Office said in an email that the case will go before a grand jury either this month or next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reserve human resources officer, Kolpak enlisted in 2002 and commissioned in 2008, according to his service record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He took command of the Springfield reserve center in July 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lt.
