{"id":45832,"date":"2024-02-15T20:23:22","date_gmt":"2024-02-15T20:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/02\/15\/navy-to-establish-second-surface-drone-unit-this-spring\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:57:09","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:57:09","slug":"navy-to-establish-second-surface-drone-unit-this-spring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2024\/02\/15\/navy-to-establish-second-surface-drone-unit-this-spring\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy to establish second surface drone unit this spring"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SAN DIEGO \u2014 The Navy plans to establish<b> <\/b>a second unmanned surface drone squadron in May, the head of U.S. Pacific Fleet told the West 2024 conference here Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is not a contractor-owned, contractor-operated capability, but this is a uniformed capability that we\u2019ll be able to own [and] operate unmanned capabilities that can be employed within particular spaces,\u201d Adm. Samuel Paparo said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy created its first unit dedicated to surface drones, Unmanned Surface Vessel Division 1, in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paparo also said the Navy will launch Integrated Battle Problem 24.1 in March, which will pair manned and unmanned capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He mentioned that prior exercises involved drones traveling 50,000 miles over seven months, as well as experiments involving the placement of SM-6 missile launchers on large surface drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2024\/02\/15\/del-toro-asks-navy-contractors-to-consider-taxpayers-over-shareholders\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/DEl-Toro.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Del Toro asks Navy contractors to consider taxpayers over shareholders<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said he needs companies to deliver their weapons, warships, aircraft and more on time and on budget and without excuses.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paparo also called the Navy\u2019s unmanned work in various fleet commands \u201ccomplementary<b> <\/b>battle labs\u201d that are all pushing toward the same goal of honing unmanned and autonomous operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A primary goal of the work is to not unnecessarily risk sailor lives, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDon\u2019t send a human being to do something dangerous that a machine can do better, faster and more cheaply,\u201d Paparo said. \u201cEnsure that you have the means of control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He noted much of this work is done quietly \u201cfor the simple reason that we don\u2019t want to expose it to an adversary that would emplace a counter to that capability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA key principle within warfare is the element of operational security,\u201d Paparo said. \u201cSo for most exquisite capabilities, if I\u2019m doing my job, you won\u2019t be knowing about it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He began his keynote speech with a grim warning about the state of the globe. \u201cThe world is increasingly descending into chaos and disorder, and from Europe to the Middle East to the Pacific, we\u2019re seeing significant shifts in state behaviors, and they are not random,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt<b> <\/b>a recent state visit to Moscow, the [People\u2019s Republic of China] president, I won\u2019t utter his name, was overheard telling the Russian president that right now, there are changes the likes of which we haven\u2019t seen for 100 years, and we are the ones driving those changes together,\u201d Paparo said. \u201cThe changes referenced are challenges to our security, our freedom and our well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Pacific Fleet head Adm.
