{"id":46199,"date":"2022-09-08T22:04:13","date_gmt":"2022-09-08T22:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/09\/08\/the-worlds-first-nuclear-powered-sub-reopens-to-public\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:55:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:55:08","slug":"the-worlds-first-nuclear-powered-sub-reopens-to-public","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/09\/08\/the-worlds-first-nuclear-powered-sub-reopens-to-public\/","title":{"rendered":"The world\u2019s first nuclear-powered sub reopens to public"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world\u2019s first nuclear-powered submarine will reopen to the public this Friday, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Press-Office\/News-Stories\/Article\/3145680\/uss-nautilus-returns-to-nhhc-fleet\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy announced<\/a>, one year after closing for a $36 million refurbishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The USS Nautilus, a history-making boat and current exhibit at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut, had been undergoing renovations at the state\u2019s Naval Submarine Base New London, where the \u201cship\u2019s wooden deck replacement, repairs to the vessel\u2019s superstructure, and restorations to the ship\u2019s hull\u201d were performed, the release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nautilus also received a new paint job, lighting and electrical upgrades and updates to staff access points, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/browse-by-topic\/ships\/submarines\/uss-nautilus.html\" target=\"_blank\">Naval History and Heritage Command<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A prominent piece of the Navy\u2019s history, the Nautilus, which shares its name with the fictional submarine in Jules Verne\u2019s <i>Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,<\/i> was commissioned in 1954. It was not only the world\u2019s first nuclear-powered sub, but in 1958, the Nautilus also became the first submarine to reach the North Pole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNautilus revolutionized not only submarine warfare, but all of naval warfare,\u201d Samuel Cox, an NHHC director and curator, said in the release. \u201cThe capability to operate virtually indefinitely without need to surface to run [d]iesel engines or recharge batteries gave it an immense tactical advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday we forget the existential nature of the Cold War, which drove the incredible pace at which Nautilus was conceived, designed and built, truly a testament to American ingenuity,\u201d Cox continued. \u201cNHHC is proud to deliver this vessel back to the public and give future generations an opportunity to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among its many noteworthy voyages, the Nautilus participated in the 1962 quarantine of Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boat was decommissioned in 1980 after 26 years of service. In total, it completed 2,500 dives and traveled 510,000 miles \u2014 all fueled by nuclear power. Two years later it would become a National Historic Landmark, and soon after, the official ship for the state of Connecticut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Submarine Force Museum is scheduled to host a ceremony on Friday to commemorate the public reopening of the vessel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou will not be disappointed,\u201d Lt. Cmdr. Derek Sutton, the museum\u2019s director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stripes.com\/theaters\/asia_pacific\/2022-09-06\/nautilus-reopens-nuclear-submarine-preservation-7238010.html\" target=\"_blank\">told Stars and Stripes<\/a>. \u201cIt is an outstanding experience for everyone. For those with mobility limitations or issues with tight spaces (or those that don\u2019t want to brave the rain on a bad day), we have a fully virtual tour available in the museum that allows anyone
